Former NYCFC II & Academy Players

And we got nothing for him. Unless he comes back to MLS, to a team that isn't NYCFC, and homegrown rights are still a thing then, we'll get nothing from him.
I'm really going to harp on this for a while -- Claudio had a ridiculous conflict of interest and screwed NYCFC and MLS over. A prospect of Gio's talent should have netted a fee of $10mm or up and Dortmund (or many others) would have been happy to pay it.

If Man City was interested in Reyna as a prospect CFG was screwed over too.

Couldn't disagree more. Claudio didn't create the situation, and nobody really knows how it was handled internally.

Claudio's ultimate loyalty needed to be to his son. Anything else would reflect really poorly on CFG. Claudio needed to have recused himself from involvement on the CFG side and let David Lee or someone from Manchester handle the discussions. Neither you, nor I, nor anyone outside of the Club knows how it was done. Criticism of Claudio therefore is way out of bounds.

Nobody in this organization deserves the benefit of the doubt when they always keep everything a secret, and at least sometimes, we end up learning we've been sold out.

IMO all of the following are true even though some of them seem in conflict:

  • Expecting Claudio ever to do anything related to Gio without putting his son's interests first, and criticizing him for doing exactly that, is unfair and ridiculous.
  • Having Claudio on both sides of the situation was a conflict of interest, and criticizing him and/or CFG for handing that poorly is fair.
  • There was no good solution to the conflict of interest, because even if you put Lee or anyone else in charge of signing Gio Reyna, Claudio will still be acting as his son's advocate, potentially adverse to the team while simultaneously being the Sporting Director and head of its Academy system, and he and his son have unilateral power to refuse any club offer to the detriment of the team, and you cannot ever expect them to set aside their own interests in such a situation.
  • Everyone knew this 5-6 years ago and decided to go forward anyway, including CFG. It's not like Gio blossomed beyond hope while at the NYCFC academy. He was a special talent before he got here and everyone knew that so this was not a problem that was unexpected.
  • If the club or CFG got angry at Reyna for being loyal to his son and not subsuming his son's interests to NYFC or CFG then CFG is even dumber and more evil than I thought.
  • Reyna's decision to leave the club within months after his son left the Academy left himself open to the suspicion he came and stayed long enough to personally oversee an Academy for his extremely gifted son to develop and then left as soon as he didn't need that relationship.
  • Even if Claudio did exactly that, which is about the worst spin you can cast under the circumstances, then NYCFC got an excellent Academy out of the deal. There's no evidence that the Academy worked for Gio but nobody else and there is actual evidence to the contrary.
  • If CFG actively pushed Reyna out because they feel betrayed even though, again, this could have been predicted by anyone with a brain 5 years ago, they are, yes, even dumber and more evil than I thought a few sentences ago.
  • If either CFG or Reyna feel mistreated by public criticism of this then give us more transparency or take the criticism like adults. Which, in fact, they are doing because nobody is publicly whining or pointing fingers and everyone is acting professional, and speculation that either CFG pushed Claudio out because of Gio or that Claudio left NYCFC high and dry is basically without evidence.
  • But we have no evidence because, again, no transparency, so basically any opinion and criticism is fair.
Upholding Omerta means you have to take unfair criticism that no reasonable person would make if you didn't keep them uninformed.

CFG did not recruit Gio
Gio had other opportunities outside of Dortmund
Gio chose the Dortmund First Team route over other first team others, one in particular in England
If CFG really wanted the kid, they would have offered him something
Signing Gio only to sell him is a disgusting idea. It would have HURT Gio and his prospects and put us and MLS in a bad light
Anyone that thinks a conflict of interest exists is delusional. You think Gio owes the Club anything? GTFO.

Weird that CFG didn't offer him anything in that case. As in a real offer that indicated real interest in developing him and playing him.

I don’t believe for an instant that CFG didn’t want Gio - he was the prized jewel of the academy and one of the top 3-4 prospects in the entire US youth pool.

That said, I’m glad he didn’t ever sign with CFG as they don’t develop youth talent and play them outside of Foden (they’re slow-walking him) and Angelino (they kinda gave up on him until he looked damn good on his Loan).

This is a supernova galaxy brain take, pure weapons-grade Pepe Silivia stuff.

Training compensation?

Dortmund offered him a first team opportunity. That’s an offer. There were others. There was no offer at CFG.

Those kids are still "amateurs" and are more than likely still to come back to MLS.

But didn’t the academy help them get a college scholarship? Those scholarships are worth close to $100,000 in college soccer. Why shouldn’t we be compensated for that?

maybe interested in loaning him and try to sell on as a profit, not ever to be in man city main team though. i just dont see them doing it. he went to the right team.

Training compensation?

i think technically this still happens but its a fraction of the millions of a potential transfer. especially when there was no contract.
