General MLS Discussion

Man, that is a brutal loss for Atlanta. Really clears the decks for NYCFC. No reason we can't be the No. 1 seed in the East, now. There is no other team in the East as good or as deep as we are.

as deep as we are, probably not. but we're also currently involved in playing 3 competitions. watched the miami game vs lafc and they're still a bit unorganized, but they seem to show great potential. they have some talented guys and could become a contender this year if things fall into place. of course, i don't think they are better than us when we are at our best. but clearly based on today's game, our players dont always show up (i'm iooking at you heber, mitri, parks.. and a bit of you too maxi!)

as you said, there's no reason why we can't be No 1 in the east again this year, but I don't think it's a given. especially if TFC find their form.. hell, even the Revs are looking pretty potent on paper.

What's the going rate for ACL injuries these days? Is it reasonably possible that Josef makes it back and gets into form late this year?
Rod Woodson tore his ACL at the beginning of the Steelers 1995 season and returned in the Super Bowl that same season. So that was a 5 month recovery.

But that definitely shouldn't be a barometer for this as that's incredibly rare from a recoverability standpoint first, and then a roster standpoint second (in terms of not placing on some form of "season ending" list for roster flexibility).

Watching a bit of the LAFC - Miami game on delay. Ben Sweat seems to be balling out for Miami.

ETA: we need to create the weekly MLS threads and move this discussion in there.

Sweat did play well. I remember one play though where he intercepted in his own 18, dribbled three guys to get out of danger and then promptly tried a long pass right to a LAFC player around midfield. Yup, classic Sweat

jokes aside, glad to see him doing well in Miami.

God these articles. 'Just not fair' my butt, everyone's gotta deal with injuries.
Martinez has grown on me. I like and respect him now.
Even if that were not the case I'd never take pleasure in an athlete's injury.

But I have a tough time spreading my concern for him, and the league, and even that team, to feel any sympathy for the Atlanta fans, who have roughly no adversity until now in the first 3 years of their existence.

exactly why I hate the 'it's not fair' mentality. What's not fair? That you have a hardship? oh, boo hoo. He's a great player, yes, the injury is sad, but I don't feel any sympathy of ATL fans.

It’s not like we asked for Cap relief when it was discovered Pirlo couldn’t kick the MLS ball. If ever there was a time for a new roster rule, it was then.

it wasn’t Pirlo’s fault. MLS balls were lighter. that’s a league wide problem.

Nope. He fouled Villa in the box in the 2018 playoffs. Should have been a penalty. Ref calls the foul on Villa. Bullshit.

Even if you think that should have been a foul, how is that on Josef? [on Josef, as in held against him as opposed to the ref who didn't call it]
That's like saying if your dog bites mine in the park, and the cops/city don't do anything, that I should only be mad at the cops/city and not the other owner/dog.

MLS pundits talking about Atlanta not being MLS Cup contenders without Josef. With the squad they have at the moment, assuming they don't get a replacement, do you think they make the playoffs? Have a shot at MLS Cup? CCL?

playoffs yes, MLS cup? potentially because the east just is not too strong and they can stumble to the final. CCL? i think they have shot over america ( america has like 8 starters injured) but not to win it.
