Wow what an ending to that one.
Castellanos saved our ass. We miss Maxi so much when he’s not there. The last 10 minutes was our best of the game. He does so much to help push the ball forward.

We got a much needed win tonight while resting some key players. Maxi and Castellanos saw some minutes but today is like a training session for them so if anything it might help with keeping their fitness.

Anyone else not sold on GMS right now? I really expected him to do more in the 1v1’s. Don’t think he won a single take on.

This team is trash offensively without maxi, it’s what I feared. Taty Saved the embarrassment but the others need to finish, my boi isi not there to help.

This team rarely shoots first instance, only villa did. Others always got to get ball adjusted before they take a shot

That just tells the story of our inability to finish. So many missed chances.

I think GMS is good but he needs time to get fully match fit and also to get used to the league. Don't think he expected such a high level of competition. And to be fair, Houston defended him well. I was expecting better crosses from him but I'll give him more time before judging him. He worked hard this game and that was evident. That to me is enough for now.

Mata's lack of focus on defense is really costing us lately. He's been the sole reason we've conceded at least 5-6 goals this season. He needs to get better.

Ring had a poor game. Not sure what's up with him but he was just sloppy.

Overall, we just couldn't finish. The chances were there. We just couldn't get it in the next til taty came on and showed everyone how it's done. His own rebound on his second goal was easily my goal of the week.

So true. Heber took way too long on his one chance.

Gaz missing the wide open net to make it 2-0 in the first half was also cringeworthy. Put that in and the game is over.

Yea. He didn't even put it on target. His weaker foot but still. Heber had the same miss two games ago though. It happens. But we had so many chances to put this game away and we just didn't. No excuses for that.

i just watched the highlights...

Miller didn't close down Tmac fast enough. he let the cross come in. gave him way too much space the entire time. Miller is looking like another Sweat situation to me... a good backup I suppose, but TInnerholm was missed for sure. Miller had zero offensive threat.

That being said, Mata could have done better on both Houston goals.

Just got home from the match. Darn glad we managed to eke out a win. Anyone else think we should’ve been up 8-2 at the half or is it just me? Also, when Maxi came on for Medina my immediate first thought was, “uh oh, we’ll never see him again, will we.” I’m neither a Medina fan nor a hater but the difference when Maxi came on was immediate and obvious.

In the last 10 games we've scored 2.4 Goals per game, and given up 1.6. The average goals scored per game league wide is 1.5.

We're killing it on offense and our defense is sub-par. It started good but it stinks right now. We went from 1.08 GA/G in the first 12 games -- which includes giving up 4 to Toronto and 3 to Minnesota -- to 1.6 in the last 10 and just 1 shutout in the last 11 games. We have 7 clean sheets but just one since May 11. In 10 prior road games, Houston was shut out half the time. We let them score twice.

I don't know why I just read multiple posts complaining about our finishing. We have the 8th best finishing percentage in the league. Not excellent, but not as bad as everyone is making it out to be for some reason. Our defense, comparatively, sucks.

We hold the ball all game every game and give up almost no chances, which should be like 90% of defense. But we manage to let teams score regularly and far too often lately on the few shots they get.

The drop off from Tinnerholm to Miller was a huge chasm. Sands didn’t play. Maxi wouldn’t have played if NYCFC could hit the side of a barn in the first 80 minutes.

Take the 3 points and run. NYCFC does not need to win in Atlanta, but needs not to lose. A tie would be a fantastic result.

I’m exhausted. Came on here for two reasons. 1) I wanted to see if dummyrun dummyrun had xG stats. I sat there tonight thinking - “I really don’t think I know what xG is. But I think it explains this game.”

2) Eric Miller is NOT good. Sweat is better. Miller can’t play for us.

Couple things:

1) Either the offense is trash without Maxi or we sucked at finishing. Can’t have it both ways — we missed plenty of chances before he came on. Tonight I say it was the latter. BTW Heber was overdue for a goose egg.

2) Mata is and always has been a poor defender. LB is our most pressing need.

3) Mitrita looked pretty dangerous, was much improved in his creativity, and did a good job of holding onto the ball and even tracking back. Credit due there for improvement.

3) I think tonight definitively proved that neither Ben Sweat nor TMac is the worst player in the league. Even if you think they suck you have to rank both above Miller based on what we saw tonight.

4) Credit to Dome for getting three points with a largely rotated squad. That oversupply of wingers is looking pretty smart right now, as we had the depth to make adjustments. 76% possession with a rotated squad is a good baseline for success, not to mention fun to watch, which I think we mostly were tonight.

I think the complaints about the finishing pertain to this game only and not to the season thus far. we've been good at finishing but this game we were just bad. Lots of clear opportunities wasted by not hitting the target, not getting on the end, taking too many touches, or something else. We could have put this game away early and coasted to the final whistle but made it difficult for ourselves by letting Houston in it.

Agree our defense has been terrible lately and if we want any chance to make a run for the CUP, we need to drastically improve that performance.

We're likely going to see more rotation this month with the congested schedule, but hopefully by september, we can play with our best XI consistently and really lay down some solid wins on our way into the playoffs.

Yea - he has no offensive threat whatsoever. Like Sweat though, he does not close down the space fast enough.
