Jesus Medina signs as young DP

Young DP, so at 20 years of age, he hits the cap at $150,000 instead of $505,000.

Left footed and played on the right side, so one has to wonder if the Harrison transfer rumors are going to start to heat up. Of course, he could play on the left side too. ETA: played right sided for Paraguay, but a lot on the left for his club.

It could be the case that his salary is below DP level, so if the Club takes the whole transfer fee as a hit this season, we could open up a new DP slot in 2019.

ETA: The man can take some free kicks. He will give us a good left footed option on set pieces.

NY Post was ready to go this morning.

Medina, 20, is joining NYCFC as of Sunday on a four-year deal and taking the team’s third and final Designated Player slot. He did not sign with City Football Group, NYCFC’s parent umbrella organization, which owns a stake in teams around the globe.

“Offensively, [Medina] will add a dimension to our team that will make us more dangerous,” NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna told The Post. “He’ll give Patrick [Vieira] more options in the front three to utilize him in different ways. He’s a player who’s very motived.”

I like the idea. I'm not sure about the player. Perhaps Gotham Gator Gotham Gator is right that we are taking his entire transfer fee cap hit in 18 so he's a one year DP.

This also means we have a lot of TAM signings to make if we're going to keep up with the league.

I seriously wonder who they will sign as a striker, as there remains a glaring lack of depth there.

Glad to see they are open to the young DP approach for at least one of our slots. Hopefully we got a good one. Also nice to see him on our books with a possibility of getting GAM for him if he moves on at some point.

One nice thing about young DPs is if they don't work out you can always sell them even if it's not for a profit. With old DPs like Pirlo and Lampard being their last stop you are essentially stuck with them until they agree to call it quits.

GAM question. If we sell him next year for 5 Million - do we get GAM? Only after one year?

Well, we all said the team needed a new DP LW, and we've got one. The way Vieira and Reyna have been scouting of late, you have to trust them. Hopefully this kid lives up to his potential.

Medina-Villa-Harrison
------Moralez-Ring
----------Herrera
Matarrita-Callens-Chanot-Tinnerholm

That's hopefully, if these two signings hit, a pretty good starting XI. The key now is getting depth for all our players who will be going with internationals this summer, so that has to be the goal now. Because we've got our first-choice starting XI.

Last year, we had 6 goals from Wallace and Lewis from the LW.

That's the minimum hurdle. You would think he deputizes for Harrison as well.

Vieira, Reyna and the scouting team have proven themselves to be excellent at finding high production TAM players like Ring and Chanot. Based on the Maxi signing I'd say their record is much less solid when it comes to DPs. The nice thing about going the young DP route is that it allows us to fully utilize our TAM so if they keep finding TAM gems maybe this is a win regardless of how it plays out with Medina.

The other good thing about the young DP route is that he counts what, $200,000 towards the cap? So we have an extra $300,000 to spend. The NY Post article said the club is looking to make 2-3 more signings this offseason, so they've obviously still got plenty of money to spend.

My gut feeling is fuck the cap hit consequences. You have the ability to spend an unlimited amount of money to bring in a guaranteed difference maker.

This move disappoints me. In a vacuum, it's a shrewd decision maybe. But Villa is 36. Are we trying to win right now or no?

I was "eh" at first..but that's because I don't know anything about him. That being said, for a team that focuses on winger play, we had little production out of those positions. That's where our goal issues are. I was advocating to see more of Lewis for the stretch run. Not because he's so good, but because after Villa there was nothing up front. If this guy can help on the wing or behind Villa, that's all that matters. I would think Maxi would play behind Villa and Medina wide. Either way it's needed.

We still have a lot of work to do on this roster and those little moves will probably be move important than this one move...but this is a good start for now.

I'm not sold that this guy is way better than Lewis. More experienced, but that's not really Lewis's fault.
