Kansas City - Postmatch

So this means that Maxi is allowed to play on Saturday, August 3 against RSL.

Personally, I'd rather not have Maxi go the All-Star Game. Be suspended for RSL. And then be allowed to play on Thursday, August 8th vs. Houston because we play on Sunday, August 11th at Atlanta.

This. In terms of the next 3 games, both the Houston game and the ATL game are way more important than RSL on the road. (Houston game is important because can’t drop points at home). I’d give Maxi some rest and have him ready for those two games in four days.

Did you watch the late game last night? “MLS single season record holder stone cold finisher” Josef Martínez blew two chances with his team down 4-3 to tie the game. They miss chances too.

I was relishing in the sweet schadenfreude hearing Atlanta fans complain about all the calls LAFC were getting (offside goals, penalty that was outside the box, etc). This from the team that was literally a statistical anomaly with all the penalties they received last year. Hehehe.

I saw that. I also saw Atlanta score 3 goals on the road against the league's best defense, who gave up just 7 goals in their previous 9 home games.

We are scoring and finishing at a better rate than Atlanta. But what I saw in their last 2 games makes me think their offense is waking up.

I have criticized Mitrita a lot before, but I think this was his best match with us so far. Much more eager to combine with teammates, and as I said his passing yesterday was second only to Maxi's in terms of trying to make it vertical and incisive. GMS is a bit cooler headed IMHO (it is a tiny sample thus far tho) and I think switching them would raise our pass completion rate but maybe make us more predictable? There's a trade between "right" and "crazily daring"?
He had a better game, no doubt, and actually passed a few times and dummied a few more, but far too often he held the ball too long which is becoming a tiring M.O. with him. And it’s especially irritating considering his gestures/screaming towards Heber to pass the ball to him as Heber was in the process of scoring. Yes, under normal circumstances he’d have the open net on the play, but Heber has earned the right to be selfish and take the shot considering his conversation rate.

I would love to see a lineup with Maxi and Mitrita in the midfield much like Man City deploys Silva and Bernardo/KDB.

----Taty--Heber--Isi---------
-------Mitrita-Maxi----------
----Mata-Ring-Tinnerholm-
-----Callens-Chanot-------

You could take Isi out and play with two strikers up top. Maybe change the backline, outside backset up. But I think this is very lacking in defense. I'd put out a lineup like this if down a goal and must score.

Would like the same but I'd play Mitri - Héber - GMS up front and either Isi or Parks next to Maxi.

I don't trust Mitri's ball retention or contribution off the ball yet enough to give him a midfield role.

I would be thrilled if he's back in time for Atlanta. That's just 2 weeks away. I suspect having him back for the road match at Cincy is the best we can reasonably expect.

  • The red card sequence with Espinoza was very confusing to me live. I didn't realize that he was initially given a second yellow/red. I just saw red. Then the ref goes to video review and seemed to signal, no that's not a red here's a red and I'm just like whatever.
This was incredibly odd and confusing. Even after he waved the yellow (and did he wave the red too?) and presented the red, I and many around me were confused as to what happened. I also didn't catch Espinoza leaving the field, so I found myself counting how many SKC players were still on multiple times (because I wasn't convinced I had done it appropriately with them all moving around).

  • How did that shot from Ring go in?
This shot by Ring I feel like is the first time he didn't try to blast a shot as hard as he could. He just guided it into the corner, beautifully done.

I'm also surprised I haven't seen anyone here mention the dummyrun dummyrun that Ring pulled on the opening goal.

It was a weird situation. I was calling for straight red. He produced a yellow card, then a red card as it was two yellows. Then he went to video review and cancelled out the second yellow and went for a straight red. For Espinoza ended the night with a yellow care and a red card. I guess the benefit of not getting two yellows is regard to yellow card accumulation.

I had thought so at first too - but if you receive 2 yellow cards in a game, you get 1 yellow card for accumulation purposes. I would think the same is true if you receive a yellow and a red.

So this was ultimately a bookkeeping VAR of no actual consequence at all?

If so and I think you're correct it seems like they should just review things like that after the game. The only reason I can see for reviewing was if the ref thought he might take the card back all together but that seemed very unlikely in this instance.

Yes, the use of VAR here was a point of personal privilege for the referee to determine whether the card should be yellow or red, as the resulting issuing of either card would serve no purpose towards the sending off of the player. In most cases, VAR is used as point of clarification, where VAR is needed to clarify on the prior play and determine the correctness of the call.

Those fines :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:
  • Player accrues five yellow cards: $250 fine and a suspension from his next MLS Regular Season Match.
  • Player accrues an additional three yellow cards (eight total): $500 fine and a suspension from his next MLS Regular Season Match.
  • Player accrues an additional three yellow cards (11 total): $750 fine and a suspension from his next MLS Regular Season Match.
  • Player accrues an additional two yellow cards (13 total): $1,000 fine and a suspension from his next MLS Regular Season Match.
  • For each two yellow cards after the player's fourth suspension, the player will be suspended from his next MLS Regular Season Match and his fine will be doubled (e.g., fifth yellow card accumulation suspension; $2,000 fine)

That was probably established years ago when salaries were lower. After the next CBA, I would expect those numbers to be negotiated upwards.
