Knicks...

Knicks openly tank during the 2018/19 season and get the 3rd pick in the draft.

They will suck for another 20 years.
I honestly don't think they tanked -- they were completely devoid of talent.

RJ Barrett no slouch. The only thing that matters is who they sign. Even with Zion, striking out in free agency (again) would leave a fringe playoff team at best.

Completely devoid of talent could be considered openly tanking. They needed that #1 because they suck at signing players. They will continue to suck as an organization and on the court for the foreseeable future.

If KD truly is a done deal like everyone believes, he gets a sidekick in Irving, etc., we draft RJ (who is a number one pick in most drafts), KD recruits some lower cost buddies, and add them to some upside youngsters in Robinson/Knox etc., and the possible resigning of Smitb Jr/DeAndre, I see a great/fun team. The organization would still suck in many respects (see eg Tommy Boy), and my preceding sentence is really long. I have been a supporter through decades of awful, so welcome anything better than that!

If this is what you want to believe, fine. Dolen me talk you out of it.

I fail to understand why KD would ever go to the Knicks. Top players want to go to places they can win, and there's a team five miles away from the Garden much closer to a title than the Knicks.

I expect us to miss out on anything good in true Knicks fashion but at least have an exciting team. This season was the least Knicks games I've watched in 15 years.

I suppose it's a good start? I'd think several new players are needed? I haven't really followed the Knicks hardcore since the good old days of Ewings/Starks/Mason I got sucked back in for a little while when Melo was in his pomp and Porzingis interested me. I couldn't name too many current players but I'd love them to give me an excuse to get back into them.

How are people feeling about the hire of Tom Thibodeau as the new coach? Possibly a new era for the Knicks? Or most likely yet another mediocre hire?

Coaching hasn't been the issue with the Knicks. When has coaching really made a difference for a team to qualify for the the playoffs?

Questionable hire, Thibs revolutionized defenses in the NBA when he was with the Celtics and he deserves credit for that. But the NBA has evolved again since then and he's demonstrated no ability to adapt. His last successful coaching stint was with the D Rose bulls. By all accounts in Minn he took a super talented team, ran them into the ground and pissed everyone off. He's horrible at managing players min and generally overplays his good players resulting in injuries and burnout.

The one silver lining is that he's supposedly a tireless worker and he watches insane amounts of film. Hopefully he's learned from his Minn time and he comes in with a new approach. The defensive system he designed with the Celtics was truly revolutionary so maybe he can come up with something again based on the offenses of today. The other issues in Minn was that he was coach and GM, he's a terrible GM so thankfully he can just focus on the coaching this time around.

i dont know how was better that was out there? Kidd? lol. mark jackson everyone wants but im not sure why is being given full credit for the warriors. as if any coach can just take a good team to a title. we seen many good teams not make it to the final or win, its not an easy thing to do almost belittle what Kerr did. Though some warrior fans say the issues he had against ownership led to him getting fired and even blacklisted in NBA.

With a young team like the knicks have and a roster that has no chance at a title I would have liked to see them take a flier on a promising young assistant as opposed to going with a guy who had his peak head coaching success over a decade ago.

i need names though, any one can say "promising young assistant". the team has young core but a lot of other guys only have one more year in contract and may even be traded to get something back instead of losing them to free agency. so the scouting is what is needed as well. The FO did revamp the whole scouting system though and draft staff. so hope they can actually draft better with Perrin in there ( he had a whole system with the jazz who have done well).

its not that i like thibs now ( i did 10 years ago) its more like there was no one that was going to take this job in this form and in NYC where everyone is burying you, i felt like he was the only one out those with some experience as a headcoach. i dont think any young assistant will do it and have any success ( even if there is none currently). This is not like maybe atlanta where they starting from ground up or the suns.

The in addition to Thibs Knicks reportedly interviewed:
  • Former Nets coach Kenny Atkinson (story)
  • Former Knicks coach Mike Woodson (story)
  • Sixers assistant Ime Udoka (story)
  • Magic assistant Pat Delany (story)
  • Bulls assistant Chris Fleming (story)
  • Spurs assistant Will Hardy (story)
  • Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley (story)
  • Warriors associate head coach Mike Brown (story)
  • Lakers assistant Jason Kidd (story)

Atkinson would have been interesting as he squeezed a lot of wins out of some young subpar Nets teams. I'd take any of the assistants that have yet to be a head coach over Thibs. The Knicks aren't winning anything any time soon. Roll the dice with an unproven guy and see if you find a talented coach. Aside from having a limited known ceiling Thibs is going to put a ton of needless miles on any promising young player on the team because he refuses to buy into modern approaches to min management.

the only one i thought was interesting i think was mosley ( the likes of mike brown, kidd, atkinson, woodson were no's from me)

the rest may or may not be successful as head coach but the problem, again, is the market. if you hired pretty much any of the rest of those assistants they get killed saying we hired a "nobody" and NY is going to go hard on them if the young dude is not having a good start ( which he wont because the team is not good) and then gets fired a few months in. NY is not the market to do it, they wont get a fair chance despite us having failures for decades.

this is why i think lots of good assistants do get a chance to prove themselves in the OKC's, Charlottes, atlantas of the world not NY.

as for the mileage, its true he burns his players to the ground, but they tend to be the good players. we dont have a rose caliber player, or a wiggins for him to burn down and over use. the team is not like those teams that were burned down because they just had to make it far into playoffs ( especially Chicago). My hope is that he feels that there is no need to burn anyone down because the team is not even made for playoffs, have them learn a system to try and get reps so players get the experience and develop so he moves the minutes around at least in the first year ( maybe two).
