Kreis Officially Out At NYCFC

Paunovic wasn't previously familiar to me but based on my cursory reading of his background, it would seem that the Fire are also prioritizing someone who has had success in developing young players over mastery of MLS rules

i expected him to continue in Serbia and maybe make a claim to take over their first team but i guess he wanted a club to manage.

It's cute getting the perspective from MLS noobs...
I'm continuously surprised by folks in the US making the argument that the problem with foreign managers is that they cannot understand the roster assembly rules and the talent pool of MLS. Across the board is US sports, it is widely expected that the guy who manages the team on the field (the coach/manager) is different than the person who assembles the roster (the GM). There are limited exceptions, but my sense is the media tends to criticize situations where the roles are combined.

My sense is that even most of international soccer follows us this model (manager and director of football) though we get a distorted perspective because it tends to be mocked in England to a certain extent and English football gets the majority of coverage international coverage in the US.

Personally, I would think it problematic if Viera were responsible for scouting and player procurement. He should be focusing on coaching on the field and in training, not out scouting to find players to add. Obviously the two functions need to work together if the team is to perform well, but if he is a good coach/tactician on the field and is good in training, we should be thrilled. He shouldn't be spending his time figuring out the roster moves. In no other sport would we generally think that combining those two roles is sensible and it strikes me as particularly non-sensical in soccer where scouting is a more international effort than in any other sport.

Because he's still getting paid by CFG, reportedly $1 million a year and Chicago Fire doesn't want to match or surpass that amount on a coach?
I doubt that would be necessary. Most likely CFG has to pay Kreis $1 million minus whatever he might manage and choose to earn as a coach. So Kreis earns $1 million no matter what. On a net basis it does mean that Kreis would basically work for free compared to sitting at home, but if he wants to keep active that's what he would do to keep his career on track..

Chicago is a bad job with maybe the worst ownership in the MLS. Kries will get a better job. Maybe back to RSL or Seattle when Sigi retires.

In any line of coaching, you need to get a new job immediately after being sacked or the stench grows worse.
He's already rumored in pretty much every open job and some that arent. I would be surprised if he doesn't have an mls head coaching job by the end of 2016 as long as no one on this forum secretly is also an mls team president.

My money is on him becoming the head coach of another expansion team. I'd say Atlanta then LAFC then Minneapolis (if they chose to get a new coach for MLS).

I'll bet you all my DanBucks that doesn't happen. No expansion team would copy us like that.
Agree. He'd be vindicated if he succeeded at an expansion team, but his image would be nearly irreparably damaged to fail a second time in a row with an expansion team - his MLS Urban Legend would be smashed. Much safer to take a role at an established club as long as it's not a perennial failure.
