MLS - April 17 - D.C. (Away)

In MLS? Sure. We should be a tentpole team like LAFC is. No argument there. It is disappointing that we are not. But we're never going to be a big fish in the NY market. And perhaps that is part of what holds us back.

I should have said “league” and not town. So we agree

The Good (not much):
  • Most of this roster has had several years playing with each other. The Taty goal was a great example of this. The Medina flick was fantastic, though I'm hesitant to give too much credit because that seems to be a play that guys try all the time and it often doesn't work and sometimes does. This time it did and it was great. It gets to Maxi and he doesn't have to pick his head up, look to see where the best option is, he just KNOWS that Tinnerholm is bombing down the right and knows how to free him the best. The rest was vintage Tinnerholm and then a fairly sloppy end product that still ended up working.

The Bad:
  • Keaton and Sands sucked. They're great players and they'll be better. They just had piss poor games on Saturday.
  • Maxi was getting caught way up the pitch and wasn't getting involved in the buildup. It was clear that it was effecting our possession and chance creation. I asked Ronny about this post-game and he mentioned they discussed this at the break and made a concerted effort in the second half to have Maxi drop deeper.
  • Tajouri-Shradi on the left makes no sense to me. He's so left-footed and not a great crosser and we're asking him to cut in to the right and it totally negates the value he brings. His FK chance was a great example of that IMO (although it was a FK and not run of play). The guy has a cannon of a left foot. Let him play on the right and cut into it. Defenders aren't going to worry about him cutting inside to his right foot.

I didn’t catch this from watching...
Shradi has impressed at times (underwhelmed as much) and I can’t believe NYCFC can’t find away to get him in the position to get more shots on goal.
ISI screams inverted winger but what do I know.

when he has played on the right, he's been able to dribble into the middle and take a shot. However, he's also out of shape and seems to have lost some of the speed he had when he first arrived. I recall watching him blaze past a defender with 1v1 skills. We don't see much of this anymore and that was one of the biggest advantages of having him on the field. He still has a canon of a left but defenders know he only goes left and he doesn't have the speed (right now) to beat them anyway.

Can I add another positive? I thought we pressed really well to start the game. Seitz and their back line couldn’t handle it.

Then I guess we ran out of gas. But I appreciated that “heavy metal” football
