MLS - April 24 - Cincinnati (Home)

Okay okay I know this is going to be conspiracy levels of stupid but... the more I watch the replay, the more I'm certain that Taty kicked the ball at the FCC player on purpose. There's no way I can see that as him trying to hit the net, he was clearly aiming for SOMETHING in the middle, idk if it was an FCC player or an NYCFC player but the only other person from our team there is Shradi so maybe he was aiming for him? idk.

pretty sure he just tried to put laces through it and totally mistimed/mishit it and it worked out.

Call me a troll, but Gudi>Mata.

Gotta give Ronny some credit on game management. Other than that flurry where SJ stopped 2 in quick succession, Cincy never really threatened and there was a remarkably consistent level of quality before and after subs.

Sands’ distribution in both games has been terrible. Negates his stopping effectiveness.

Keaton has not been up to par and you can see that he knows it.

Chanot was a beast again.

While Cincy was pretty bad, and Cropper in particular was a disaster, we still did the things we often fail to do, e.g. score on set pieces, kill off a bad team, run up the score, and keep a clean sheet when we have a big lead.

Yeah sex is good, but have you ever watched NYCFC win 5-0 in their home opener?
The DC game a few seasons back was 4-0 and I thought THAT was

Watch it again... His leg swings towards the center of the box, not towards the goal! And he's facing towards that too

Mls pundits even can't believe medina scored
Kid gets no respect and he's gonna be our MVP. GIF of the year again - the hero Gotham needs:

It felt great to be in the stadium. Awesome weather and an awesome result.
A little weird, definitely different, but it's a start on the road back to something more normal.

(Was anyone able to find any food that wasn't a hot dog or chicken bucket? :))

I’m going down the rabbit hole now...
feels like I’m analyzing the Zapruder film.
This is some deep state s#!%...

I think Shwafta Shwafta is right. He's looking and aiming away from goal. FWIW the OPTA widget does give any weight to his goal when counting up xGoals, because they don't count it as a shot.

But that's a poor decision at best. We had one player, Shradi, in the direction Taty sent the ball, and he was surrounded by at least 4 defenders. Just pure luck led to that deflection, when Taty was almost point blank on goal (though TBF he had both a defender and the keeper in his way)..

Maybe he's been getting into Hockey during his quarantine time in North America?

This is correct, and I ultimately think he was trying to thread a pass to Shradi. And it wasn't the right decision given he had an open look at net.

What's more confounding is that they credited him with the goal even though his kick was not on frame. Contrast that with Chanot, which was much less clear.

Yeah. I'm no expert at soccer tactics but:

It looks like he's aiming for there, as in the moment before this isi signals and you can see taty looking at that direction.
...But then Taty makes two mistakes:
1. He fails to hit it in the general trajectory of my red line
2. He hits it WAY too fast for Isi to even come CLOSE to touching the ball (By the time the ball hits hagglund, isi isn't even in the 8 yard box):

The fact he hit it so hard is the only reason I think he might have been going for a shot. But it just doesn't make any sense from every other angle I look at it.

...It's fun to be able to talk about something as useless as whether or not Taty meant to shoot that. Happy for the season to be back!

given the area where the ball is and the players around isi, if he was going to slot it into isi, the pass needed to be hard and fast or it wasn't going to get through. isi's only chance would be to deflect from that distance and not try to settle and take a shot, so a blistering pass is an ok option from there.

guess only taty can tell us what his real intentions were!

I am laughing at this discussion and genuinely looking forward to it either a) being discussed further on NYCFC-related podcasts or b) Taty himself if there was a post-game interview.

Welcome back everybody!

Completely agree! I mean, he took a shot, totally duffed it, then got ridiculously lucky it caromed in. End of story!

Good game. Good for our confidence and getting our rhythm going. No one really had a bad game but we made some serious mistakes in the middle of the field that would have been seriously punished vs a better side.

My notes:
- Parks is not making a good case to start over Morales and may lose his spot sooner rather than later.
- Gudi takes a decent free kick, but he's still too damn slow on defense and looked gassed after about 20 minutes. Malte looked more solid defensively and I would prefer him in games where the opposing team has more dangerous wingers. *ALWAYS
- Gray looked good in his debut!
- Medina's new found confidence is good to see and hope it keeps up.
- Sands still not looking like his usual self but this was vs FCC who have broken many of his bones...so..
- Morales continues to look like a solid player in the d-mid position with his limited minutes.
- No love for Haak :(
