MLS is Back Tournament - 2020

Happening to live somewhere that is experiencing a pandemic and isolating in your own apartment is a lot different than being told to:

1. Fly somewhere
2. that is at a worse point in the pandemic than where you live to
3. interact with a much larger number of people (teammates, opponents, officials, etc) where
4. hotel/resort staff are not subject to the bubble and will be going back and forth between MLSville and real life and
5. someone within the bubble is bound to make different quarantine decisions than you would.
The only other option is to not play the season at all. There isn’t a single place in the country that is COVID free where you can host a tournament. So you either don’t host a tournament and cancel the season or you do the best job possible at ensuring player safety and deal with the consequences. There’s no in between.

Amazing to read the handful of folk on here with ostrich head in the sand comments about how safe the conditions will be, and how stupid everybody is who’s questioning it, considering the Disney staff attending to the NBA and MLS players are not being sequestered and come/go on a daily basis. To discount that is asinine. Full stop.

Read the other day a post saying the risk was at an acceptable level in Florida because of the safeguards MLS is putting in place. That’s not just dumb, but incredibly irresponsible since he’s speaking for how others being impacted by having to live/work in the Florida environment should view the risk. There’s a saying, don’t spend other people’s money. Well fuck, in this case, don’t judge other people’s health risks based on your own values and tolerances.

Also don’t Fcking judge a player that doesn’t feel comfortable with this tournament situation because they’re speaking up now. What they may have done in the past in NY/NJ where they live is their business, and for all we know they’ve been a conscientious hermit coming in contact with next to nobody- so if they don’t feel safe in the context of this Disney Florida bubble, that’s their prerogative. Judging them for it reduces one to the lowest common denominator.

Shit, I remember a particular individual slamming BdB for not shutting down schools fast enough because of the potential risk, but now it’s ok for others to be in an environment with Disney staff who live in an area of Florida spiking and aren’t governed by strict isolation protocols. Hypocrisy is a wild drug.

I fully expect a 500 word rebuttal, and frankly I don’t care. There’s no way to spin a word salad to justify the risk to the health of all the players/staff being forced to participate.

The only place MLS should move this tournament to is straight to the the garbage can. If you think that someone is as dumb as a bag of hammers for not wanting to go to Florida right now, that says more about you than it does Brad Stuver.

Did Stuver or any other NYC player complain ever about being in metro-NY the last 3 months? Because suddenly to complain about Florida is irrational in that context and if this is his first pronouncement he's dumber than a bag of hammers.

Daily new cases (per million). This is Stuver's reason for wanting out of Florida now, as Florida just spiked to 187 new daily cases/M, but he sat quietly through 4 spikes in NY over 500/M. Did he ever try to get out of the metro area or complain about the local conditions?

This is all over the place. It's completely irrelevant what Stuver did or didn't say during the NY outbreak (Maybe he decided to follow the health advice and not leave the metro area? Maybe his $100k salary doesn't afford him the luxury of a country retreat? Maybe he didn't think it was helpful to complain at a time when local govt policy seemed focused on preventing deaths above all else?)

But nevermind that. If his employer suddenly tells him he's contractually obliged to move from one hotspot to another, he's got every right to speak up about that. Good for him for doing so, and shame on those who would rather he just 'shut up and dribble' just because he didn't meet some weird purity test from the amateur epidemiologists.

Same old Ulrich....still a fucking prick. Welcome back asshole
Stay classy dude.

It’s really too bad you take a post highly concerned about people’s health & well-being and claim writing it is being prick’ish and that of an asshole. Projection is a hell of a drug.

Spin however you want, but that has been your style for some time now. You spit expletives and attacks at people who don't write something you agree with. Before all this, it was about subjective things like the quality of certain players, now you've carried your general prickishness into the pandemic talk all while exaggerating other people's post.
If you want to live in an echo chamber where nobody sats anything that even remotely divers from your expert opinion, start your own blog.

Please, go ahead and reference my posts where I slam players and don’t back my comments up with examples. I’ll wait.

Also, go ahead and reference my posts about the pandemic that are subjective or that aren’t backed up with citations - you’d be hard pressed to find another poster that so readily links to published info. There was no need in my last post to cite the Disney employees as it’s been widely trending, with regard to the NBA (MLS doesn’t get the same coverage), that they aren’t being isolated. It also wasn’t needed to specifically call out the posters I was referencing- they know who they are - there’s no exaggeration of what they posted.

But yes, again, stay classy with the name calling.

I don’t think anyone said shut up and dribble. I made a comment saying it’s surprising that they are speaking out now. I figured maybe the players association has urged them to do so. Our players especially have always been very silent on social media. I was simply trying to strike up conversation. But my comment above stands. You either play or you don’t. There’s no where you can play this tournament that is 100% safe. You can’t force the staff to stay in the bubble as well. They can test temperatures, and I’m sure they will, of incoming staff every day. I’m sure there are precautions that will be taken. I bet every single person here knows someone or knows of someone who was infected with COVID. During this entire pandemic I’ve worked in retail with 100+ other associates at my store alone and I’m close friends with people at other locations and no one that I know or that friends know or anyone anywhere in the sphere of my circle has been infected. I’m in Tampa, a supposed epicenter now. You’d think there would be sick people all around me the way it’s being discussed on media platforms. As far as I’m concerned nothing is even going on. I go to work, I come home, I go out occasionally. The same can be said for everyone I know. I’m not saying COVID isn’t real. Our reality down here isn’t yours up there. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone here who knows of anyone infected. Your circle might be 5-10 miles. Mine is 50-100 miles that I regularly travel. Y’all were getting 10k cases in your city alone. We’re peaking now at 4K in our state and the majority concentrated in the south where there are a lot of migrant workers and farming.
So this isn’t Florida’s fault that suddenly we shouldn’t play the tournament. If you’re worried or anyone is worried about player safety it should be cancelled. Someone getting infected is inevitable since they’ll be in confined spaces for over a month. But to shit on Florida like you have any clue whatsoever of our reality is bullshit. You will go through exactly what we are going thru with reopening. If you think every New Yorker is walking around wearing 3M masks and practicing social distancing you’re delusional.

It wasn't you, it was mgarbowski mgarbowski who said players speaking out now were "dumb as hammers", as if they've somehow forfeited their right to be concerned.

And you're right, I'm not in Florida right now, all I can go on are the statistics. And I think that any employee who spoke up about having to relocate somewhere with those statistics would be justified in doing so. Doesn't seem like a controversial opinion to me.

I don’t find it controversial. If they think that playing in Cleveland or Chicago or New York would be safer then I do find it irrational.

I don't think any of the players have said that. But even if they did I wouldn't call it an excuse to belittle players for raising legitimate concerns about playing somewhere like Florida.

I'm rather disgusted with where I live right now and watching NYers -- from public figures to people I know online to people I know IRL -- lecture and criticize Florida for the last couple of weeks -- with this record and without any nod towards our own failures --has convinced me I live among .... I'm not going to put a word on it but I'm pretty sure you all know what I think.

There is a big, big, big, big difference between being told to quarantine and being told to go play a tournament where you're not quarantining, and holding that event in a state and region where cases are spiking. All due respect, it's a ridiculous comparison to compare a period when you were quarantining versus a period when you're being told not to quarantine.

Too many nasty posts today. I know the issue makes everyone a little crazy, but we can all moderate our tone more respectfully.

I think the plan for this tournament is not to tell players not to quarantine. It’s to quarantine them together while the tournament is happening. And yes, there will be some minimal interaction with the outside world, but that’s not any different than the quarantine at home experience where people would have to venture out to buy food, hit the pharmacy, etc.

I haven't really read word for word what everyone has posted, but as Gotham Gator Gotham Gator I don't want LionMOD coming out.

We want our players safe and healthy and to avoid illness for themselves and their families. We also want NYCFC to play. For now, enjoy Premier League football which has a game on nearly everyday.

Sometime last week, I had noticed much less bickering and more positive discussion on this board recently and was rather optimistic about the future of this board. I then remembered that prior to the shutdown, it had become quite clear (to me) that you were among the more toxic members of this forum, which had played a role in the decrease in traffic (I know at least one very good poster left this site because of your attacks, and im sure others have as well) among other factors. At that point, it occurred to me that you haven't posted in a while, which validated my theory that you were the center of the toxicity that permeated and was killing this site over the last year or so.
Flash forward to today, where after about 1-2 months of absence, you chime right back in with an expletive laced rant targeting the thoughts and observations posted by (I believe) me and at least two others.

I don't believe my assessment of your posting style is wrong, but if a third party on here believes i'm off, im happy to be corrected.

I do apologize to everyone else for responding the way I did, but I stand by my point.

This is a discussion board, where supporters of a particular soccer discuss things directly and indirectly related to said team. Don't be a prick simply because someone posts a player assessment that you think is "bullshit" or has a different take on our players and such. It's been your thing for a while.

Eta: btw I do you think you are also among the best posters on this site tbf, despite your abrasiveness. So I guess my point is, try to keep the bite but get rid of the venom in your posts!

Nice. You started today by calling me a prick and an asshole to now making it about my posting style while accusing me of being toxic. Don’t stop being you.

Now, what will you be having for breakfast if we play during a 9 AM match?

Thank you for this. One addendum. People, please use the "ignore" feature.

This forum is a much happier place when you don't see posts by people you find objectionable.
