I'm planning on getting my rewatch of this game in tonight or tomorrow night, but a couple of initial takeaways from my seat at RBA:
  • Sands looked visibly less comfortable as a LCB in a back 4, but still seemed capable and hit some very nice passes with his left foot (including one long ball with the left in the 40' that I can't wait to see the replay on). I'm very interested in seeing what the defensive organization looked like and what issues were there. How much of it was New England playing well, how much of it was individual mistakes, or how much of it was just some unorganization in the back after not playing a back 4 much lately, long break, Sands at LCB, etc.
  • We had some great offensive movement resulting in fantastic chances. Nice to see Maxi play better and find his longer through balls a bit. Yeah, Taty didn't finish that 1v1 with Turner but what an amazing touch by him to bring that down to have the chance to take the shot. Talles didn't impress all that much live but seemed really physical. Curious to watch more of that there.
  • I believe this was the first game that Taty has been subbed off this season.
On another note, this was my first "home game" at RBA and it just felt weird. I've been to a few away games there in the past and as such am used to a hostile energy in that stadium and it was odd being there for our "home game". To add to that, the staff did an amazing job at covering up Red Bull signage and including NYCFC signage wherever possible and in places I would think would be overlooked. But it still was just weird.

based on watching it at home, my opinion of the defensive lapses would be 30% unorganized 50% individual mistakes (lack of focus, ball watching mostly), and 20% Revs playing well.

I thought Sands had a poor game. Maybe it was due to his being at LCB, but i thought his positioning was fine. He seemed to lack focus and made silly mistakes that he normally just doesn't make. anton also wasn't on his A-game either though i wouldn't say it was a bad game for him.

1st goal - morales or parks just didn't challenge the ball and the biggest reason fault. neither of them were ready for a shot at that time and neither really attempted to block it when they realized a shot may be coming. also, it looked to me like johnson was relaxed and the reason why he wasn't able to save it. it wasn't far from him and if he was ready for it, i think he would have easily saved it.

2nd goal - unorganized. we had people marking nobody and one of the open revs scored on a free header.

3rd goal - mental lapse, tired legs? neither anton nor chanot made a true effort to challenge the cross. sands was slow in getting back in position to defend the cross.

To me they were all unrelated and not emblematic of any particular overall flaw.

First - Morales and Parks looked like 2 infielders converging on a pop up and neither caught it. Just a breakdown in the moment. Not sure how to even plan for that.

Second - weird long free kick sequence. New England took the FK from the side, we stopped but did not clear, and 12 seconds later they made almost a second FK-type service from almost the exact same spot. The FK line by both teams sort of held the entire time, but no surprise our organization was iffy the longer it went on. We ended up with 4 defenders somewhat compact in front of goal, and the Revs smartly put 3 attackers between the 2 defenders furthest from the second service. The middle of those 3 attackers had nobody marking him; we had 2 defenders on the side close to the service with nobody to mark.

Third - mostly the same analysis as you. Tinnerholm left the outside attacker unmarked to run to center and cover ... Chanot? Chanot overran the cross, Sands under ran the cross, Tommy was just right.

On the third goal you have to give a lot of credit to Gil for the pass which basically cut off 3 defenders and sprung the Revs player to get the cross off. If Maxi hit that ball we’d all be gushing about it. But even with that NYCFC should have covered but both Chanot(?) and Sands timed it wrong.

The first goal was just weird how the ball popped in the air and Parks and Morales watched it like a pop fly. Neither of them challenged for it or expected Bou to volley it.

Second goal was what you never let happen on a corner - clear out and then turn right back over and volley back in. Nobody also challenged Gil on the cross.

Yeah, on that third, it really was a wonderful ball by Gil to open it all up.

I'm not quite sure what caused Sands to do this, but right when the cross is made, he kinda steps back one step as if he thinks it's going to come in behind him. Not sure if he just misjudged it, or thought Chanot was going to get to it and he wanted to be in position to deal with the deflection or what. But I think if he doesn't make that one misstep, he gets there and clears it.

Also kind of interesting from one angle, it looks like he contorts his body in order to reach the ball, but make sure it's cleared away from goal and doesn't end up in an own goal. He may have been able to make contact with the ball had he not done that, but it would've been a for-sure own goal.

Seems like we still need a dangerous player in front of goal. Which I have been saying since Heber got hurt.
I’m guessing our $12 million man didn’t finish chances either

Geez you have a short leash. It's been a single game since the international break. We played well. Andrade scored. It'll come together soon, I wouldn't be surprised if the ATL game will be a good place for it.

It’s not directed at him. It’s just the process they want us to buy into. Pay 12 million for a guy that’s unpolished and then sell him for 17 million after he shows flashes finally in the Fall of 2022. Does nothing for us

I think what everyone is having issue with is you are saying this after essentially 1 game (not even 90 minutes worth) of a kid in a new country, new league, new team, coming back from injury. You have to give him some time to acclimate and get match fit. Having an immediate effect on a game as a brand new signing is fantastic to see, but it's also rare.

I'm sure you will be singing praises if those flashes in the fall of this year or next result in silverware.

of course I will. But haven’t they made clear the priority with his transfer was business related? I don’t give a shit about their business. I’m not a CFG fan. I need a guy that can score now.

It is a business plan to transfer him in the future. But if he doesn't perform here, I really doubt he's going anywhere. So, he'll have to perform if he wants to move on to europe, which means we'll get at least a season or two (not including this season) of solid Magno performances before the mothership swoops in. CFG or not, this is just how clubs are run now. It's pretty rare to see quality players staying at club for longer than a few years.

Eintracht Frankfurt had a kick-ass team and then other teams came and picked them apart. Dortmund get this every offseason. And they're miles ahead of NYCFC, of course.

It's not uncommon for clubs to work like this, and in fact unless you're a top top team, it's very difficult to hold on to those types of players. So having the model of "Let's get players that could possibly shine and then move them on" isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I don’t think a Talles Magno developmentally is at the same level as a guy like Almiron.
What other clubs are trying to do is get guys that would head to Holland or Portugal ahead of a bigger move. I want those guys.

Really? You don't think so? He was recently being eyed with big moved to big clubs. An injury and covid and he's not. But that level is still within him.

I think you're being unreasonable here. At its best, MLS is a developmental league. I love this team and want to see them win, but the way this league gets bigger and better is by getting players like this to be able to perform and be sold at profit. Bringing in Magno is exactly the kind of move an ambitious team in MLS should be making.

So the "Match Worn" Juneteenth jersey from this match for Sean Johnson is an outfielder's kit, as are the kits for all the other keepers I saw. Odd, no?

Also, only 7 players available.
