MLS Live Rights Bought by ESPN

This may be easy to find but this guy is lazy. Is ESPN+ a separate app completely, or is it one ESPN app to rule them all? If I am a cable subscriber can I switch between main ESPN and an MLS game on ESPN+ within 1 app?

On my computers I just go in through the espn.com website. On my iPhone its the main ESPN app. I can't figure out how to get it through AppleTV at all other than AirPlay from my phone.

Regular ESPN app on Apple TV has it. Pretty noticeable new menu item at top. Might need to update app.

Thanks. I confirmed the problem is that I am a cord cutter and don't have a cable provider. I checked to make sure the app was updated and don't see anything about ESPN+. Not a big deal until MLS Live goes dark. ESPN said they are working on it

It on the same app. And you can switch within the app. See my screenshot above for the nav bar.

Meanwhile, you have to leave espn+ for replays and go to Browse, then MLS to find replays. And i just tried the RSL match and it told me it’s blocked in my area? Strange. So i switched to my mls live app and I’m watching the replay on that.

Bad design. I looked for replays in the + section and thought they weren’t available at all when I couldn’t find them. The NYC/RSL local blackout thing might be a coding error where they forgot to drop it after 24 hours.

Speaking of ESPN, they give super short shrift to writing about MLS. Pretty much the most you get after a gameweek is dry match recaps.

I know soccer media has been gutted of paying positions over the last two years, but ESPN is a primarily American-sports-centric entity which isn't doing coverage justice to the domestic league. I know I'm a homer, but last night's match with Atlanta deserves a thinkpiece or some kind of punditry, don't you think?

Yes.

I was hoping MLS would get an ESPN boost with the new deal. Same way the NHL lost theirs when they struck the CBS deal. I’m willing to give them till next season to see how they sort it out. Too bad I don’t watch SC too often anymore to see if there are highlights shown.

I’d love it if NBC bids/wins the next round - their coverage of the premier league is always great and they have the rollover networks if there’s a programming jam-up.

My problem with that is they don’t reach as broad an audience as ESPN. I feel like MLS already has the NBC rolllver audience from the PL coverage. I want the fan watching a college basketball/football game to not change the channel and find themselves getting into the soccer that comes on.

NBC had the rights once upon a time. They gave MLS zero coverage on a platform not many watch.

The deal with ESPN is the same they signed a few years ago. They have owned MLSLive since then, but did not move it to their platform until this season because they have been slow to develop their non-cable attached digital strategy.

They had higher broadcast quality than ESPN or Fox though, and that deal was kind of their beginning into soccer coverage. They only had I believe a year to year deal until the last big deal was signed with FOX/ESPN/UNI. If they got a long term deal, I bet they would invest heavily into the product, and I think they are just better at overall presentation than their rivals.

Yeah, their production is really the main reason why the European league I watch most is EPL. I refuse to watch beIn sports unless its a USMNT game or maybe El Clasico (though I do love me some Ray Hudson). And the Fox Sports broadcasts are ok, but dont come close to the NBC EPL broadcasts.

Let's not forget that a lot of ESPN content is going to become part of Disney's streaming platform (Disney's Netflix clone for Disney-owned stuff) very soon. If they care to do it right, that could be an avenue to blow up MLS coverage in a huge way. Or I'm wrong, and it could just isolate it further with a more atomized audience.
