MLS - May 8 - Orlando (Away)

part of the problem is how do you attract a player to NY with ronny and lee at the helm and a city in shambles at the moment?

taking an MLS paycut for most of these DP class players has to mean something and if all they care about is getting that last paycheck, it's not even worth signing them because they'll just piss us off with their lack of effort and/or effectiveness.

Lee has also made it clear that the club's strategy is not to go after aging european stars. we need a martinez or vela type signing. a zelarayan type signing. its surprising that CFG is unable to find these types of players and get them.

it’s not surprising. They’re not looking for them for NYCFC. They’re looking for them for Man City.
We could have anyone we want tomorrow. No one in the world can write a bigger check than our owner. But we won’t.

The 2nd goal as part of the derby hat tr

Agreed. It's hard for a player to buy into the project at this point with no stadium plan during their career with the club.

We're not a new, shiny club anymore.

write a bigger check. They’ll get over it.

write a bigger check. They’ll get over it.

the question still remains... who we can find that will give their all to the club? the era of european stars coming to retire and half assing it seems to be over though, but i can't help but feel if we did find someone like that they would become pirlo 2.0 without the amazing hair.

Anybody notice at around the 50 minute mark
(I think it was) Jasson get a high arm to the head? There was some commentary from ESPN commentator about “rugged and effective”. I get there is physicality but getting the arm up into the head In my book is bullshit. I was watching on a small screen but it looked like bullshit to me. Nani scores not too long after. Anyway, I’m glad Martinez got disciplined cause that was some major bullshit last week...
In regards to tonight, anyone?

saw that. thought it was a clear foul. but sibiga was pretty inconsistent how he was calling the game.

jasson really needs to play stronger though. he's constantly on the ground.

I’d like to see the xG for this game because while NYCFC didn’t play an attractive game, it seemed that they had the better of the few chances.

Acevedo looked good and definitely sends the long passes from deep.
Parks was ineffective in the final third, seems like he kept passing to the other team.
Taty was doing some prime shithousery, now I know why Palmeiras wants him so bad. Would fit in well in Brazil with dark arts like that.

It was hilarious when both Chanot and Callens went down to waste time. Too bad this isn’t the CCL against Concacaf teams.

A point is good. 3 road games so far and 4 points. Get a little above 1 PPG on the road and crush your home games (2+ PPG) and you are on the way to a playoff spot and top 2-3 finish.

Had you offered me four points from back-to-back road games at PHI and ORL 8 days ago, I would have taken it and run away before you changed your mind.

Could have been 3 points tonight, would have loved Medina to finish that last chance, but four points from these last two games is really impressive all things considered. Yes they need a few better players, but generally speaking this has been a pretty good start all things considered. Should have done better against D.C., maybe could have done better tonight, but it could have been a lot worse. Tricky last three games before the break, but we've put ourselves in position to hold serve until we can hopefully get reinforcements in over the summer.

He’s way overmatched. He looks like a rag doll out there. The fact that he is starting just highlights our unnecessary lack of depth.

How is it that Chicharito and Vela and Martinez etc give their all to the club?

based on the post press conf.. jasson seemed to start because Ronny likes medina out on the right side, where Isi is most effective. He wanted medina out there and needed someone to play on the left.. jasson is right footed so that made sense.

Isi is a much better winger than Medina though. I'm not sure where Medina's best position would be to be honest. he's not fast enough or good enough 1v1 to be a winger, but he's not a visionary to be an attacking mid.

picking good examples does not prove a point for all DPs. there are plenty of DPs in the league over the years who have fallen flat on their face. The trend is getting better because MLS is getting better, but the fact is, just because we flash the cash we are not guaranteed a player who will give their all for the team. I agree with you that we need a special signing instead of picking up younger DPs who have yet to prove themselves. But I just don't know who that would be at this moment in time.

What I'll say about this game is that... I said last time that this game against orlando would be a season definer. And I was right. I was pleased with what I saw, considering the absence of Maxi. This team really is just one or two pieces away from being a contender. As crazy as it seemed in the summer. And, I might get flack for this, but I kinda like what Ronny is doing. Also, he subs EARLY and CORRECTLY, and I really like that.

We played well against a good Orlando side, and this game was always going to be a) tough and b) very open. Not surprising to give away a goal, but at least it's only ONE goal. Three at the back for 2 / 4 games and we are right now, in terms of goals against:

In what I consider to be a really good place in the league.
Wait... one of the best GA in the league and.......

(shhh i know cinci but a few other teams played them too and had a chance to rack up the GF)

I'd say I'm quite really pleased

ATC, it was a fun game to watch and I think we played fine. RD was solid. Lack of depth isn’t on the players or RD.

True but barely so once you exclude the penalty.
ASA xG: ORL 0.63 NYC 1.56
Opta xG: ORL 0.64 1.67

Opta weighs the penalty at 78.84 % so the NYCFC run of play xG was about 0.77, and about half of that (0.39) was generated on the final Medina chance.

The xG story to me this season (and for the Ronny era overall) is defense. We've conceded 3 goals in 4 games (0.75 per game), and xGA is 0.67 (league best). Combine 2020 and 2021 and the GA/g is 1.04 and xGA/G is 1.12. The reason it appears we keep giving up long range bangers (all 3 GA this year) is we allow very, very few solid chances.

On the xGF side, a large portion of our generated xG is due to the fact that Taty is a shooting fiend. xG is a function of (1) number of shots and (2) quality of shot opportunity. Taty has 96 shots in 2020-21. The next highest in the league is 76.

Can't score if you don't shoot. Iirc, villa always had one of the top number of shots in the league every season..

I'm happy he shoots. I just wish he'd put them in the net more often.

Still happy that maxi wasn't on the field for the pk... We dodged a bullet there fellas.

Having ruan go out injured really helped us. If he had stayed in, we would have been under more pressure, I think. Especially as the game went on and gudi melted even more. Hah. I was hoping to see how malte would cope vs ruan.. guess we have to wait longer to see how he does vs a quality opponent for more than 15 mins

but here’s the rub. That’s not our job. A competent front office finds that guy.

Cincy just signed the best U20 player in Brazil. Like. Come on.

Thought we were outplayed for most of the match, but not incredibly thoroughly. But we really did limit their big chances so credit has to be given to Sean and the back line for their organization there.

Ronny made sure to mention a couple of times about how we had more “big chances” than they did in the post game press conference, and while I agree with him to a degree, I think it lacks context (though I don’t blame him at all for leaving that context out in a press conference)

He also mentioned that Nani scored a wonder goal and sometimes that happens and what can you do. And while Nani’s goal was fantastic, I think we all saw that coming. We allowed a guy of his quality to cut into his right foot without any ball pressure at all. Yeah, great goal and credit to Nani, but let’s not act like we couldn’t have prevented that in any way.

He’s way overmatched. He looks like a rag doll out there. The fact that he is starting just highlights our unnecessary lack of depth.
He needs to learn how to feel out where his defenders are a bit better.

Seemed a few times he had a defender on his back shoulder and he touched the ball in a way to allow that defender to challenge the ball physically without conceding a foul. Had Jasson had the ball on the other foot, a foul would likely have been called (or retained possession)

In his MLS career, Taty has 22 goals off of 24.75 xGoals. That's a little below average, but not poor. And 2020 is the entire reason it is below average. Exclude 2020 and he has 16 Goals off 15.23 xG in MLS. Now last year counts, but it was also the first time he had to play without a No. 9., and though it is clear he likes to shoot no matter what, I think when we lost both Heber and Mitrita, Taty took it upon himself to shoot even more, which forced some trade-off between quality and quantity.

And that Jasson shot you said he needs to make in the chat yesterday had an xG of 4.41%.

It is correct, though yes other context can always help. Orlando had no shots with an xG above 10%. We had 2 not counting the penalty. But outside of those 2 and the penalty we created very little. The Taty curler in the 86th minute that looked like it had a chance was only 3.6%.
