MLS Officiating: it's shit-tastic!

That’s a clear dive, and it ridiculous that we have VAR and it still stood, but that’s hilarious coming from Dwyer. He has no qualms about blatantly diving as long as it benefits his team

Earned a penalty vs Portland off a complete dive.

Ran into Robles to get a goal.

Some other stuff I can’t remember all from this year.

PRO release a statement.

The Professional Referee Organization (PRO) acknowledges that an officiating error occurred during the 86th minute of the match between Columbus Crew SC and Orlando City SC on July 21.

The referee awarded a penalty kick after contact from Orlando City SC defender RJ Allen on Crew SC forward Patrick Mullins. PRO believes the minimal amount of contact between the players did not justify this decision.

Video Review protocol requires that all reviewable incidents are checked and analyzed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for clear and obvious errors or serious missed incidents. The VAR checked this penalty kick decision, but did not accurately identify the on-field call as a clear and obvious error based on the minimal contact between the two players. Therefore, the VAR did not appropriately recommend a video review.

PRO holds its officials accountable and takes appropriate action when necessary. In addition, PRO evaluates the performances of every match official, and is taking steps to continually minimize these types of errors through rigorous training and testing protocols.

this is almost as stupid as the open cup debacle- this means nothing, honestly. Why not fine the ref's for making calls that are this bad? Or maybe they are fining behind the scenes? I mean, there's gotta be more accountability than "takes appropriate action when necessary," whatever that even means.

That’s absolutely hollow - PRO has made so many bad calls and missed calls that have changed the outcomes of matches this season. Apologies mean nothing if they don’t fire for poor performance, change VAR to mimic the German implementation, or both.

FYI, I’ve seen two red card worthy challenges by the same Houston player (1 for sure, 1 you could live with), and the bastard doesn’t have a card.

Going in mid shin studs up and the ref giving a talk isn’t okay.

Holy shit, DC’s third goal is both the Assist & Goal of the Year winner. I never thought I’d see Rooney run that hard, especially on defense, and his tackle and counter are absolutely perfect, but that pass is sublime. And while the header was just a header, the fact that it capped such a remarkable series of events is all the more amazing, as opposed to all the buildup going for naught with a miss - the probability of those dominoes falling together was a lottery ticket!!!

Fucking disgraceful. Had almost no handle on the game. Should have given Urruti a yellow for simulation and should have looked at the red card he gave to Zeigler, which he would have seen he was wrong on. And the end of the game was chaos. Really should have pulled out a card or two the first time the players started going at it, but he let it all go.

A Sunday night packed with 3 red cards, 3 crap-tastically bad refs (okay maybe TOR-NYC's ref wasn't so bad this time), and 3 craptastic wins? Sounds like MLS to me.

But hey, Dallas lost so that's awesome.

I too was furious with Unkel, but apparently he caught the reaction from Ziegler, who smacked Ruidiaz on the side of the head twice in reaction to the head butt. Doesn’t matter what happened before, that’s a red.

Now, Ruidiaz deserved red too, but that mistake may be on the VAR for not alerting Unkel - we’ll never know. And since Ruidiaz doesn’t play for Atlanta, he will probably be suspended.

The interesting call was the non-penalty when Urruti was scissored down in the box. The ball had gotten away from him and was heading over the end line, but it was still in, so technically that’s a penalty, although I can understand why Unkel declined to call a penalty.

I think I was too afraid to say so last night, because it was so insanely dramatic, and because it was fantastic watching Orlando unravel there at the end, but does anyone else think Acosta was offsides?

Ian Joy thought the goal should not have counted because of this foul on the doomed Orlando counter, but as one of the replies points out, if the ref saw it he would have played the advantage.

Yup, Ian Joy got it right. But during the replay, FOX announcers never talked about that part of the play. Only Rooney challenge and Acosta maybe offside.

But that’s a foul, a yellow card, and turnover the goal from Acosta.

It's before the attacking phase of possession, and advantage would have and should have been played.
