MLS Offseason 2019-2020

When I first saw this, I thought they were saying there would be no draft at all. Not doing it live I suppose reflects its diminishing importance, but is not big news to me.

for us no, for the prospects id say so. they are still getting drafted just that they wont have the stage and event going on for them and families to go to.

Yeah. This makes sense. Academies are doing pretty well of getting the majority of talent already within MLS pipelines, but there's still a handful of talented kids out there that aren't in those academies. So I think the draft still has some value, just not nearly enough to make it an "event".

For all those saying "Big name Coach / DP doesn't mean anything"... Here's an example from a Montreal team that recently has been struggling with attendance:
We ring a bell every time we sell a season ticket,” Gilmore said. “And the bell rings quite often since the [Henry] announcement.

I don't think this applies to all markets. Some markets don't require something like this, such as Portland, Minnesota, etc. But I think many markets need something like this, such as NY or Montreal, where people say 'Hey, I know that guy, I wanna see him live!"

Does anyone else think it is really odd that there can be no trades during the expansion draft? The trade window closed November 13
also the draft rules specifically state No trades during the draft.

Which means that unless some trades were made that have not been announced, then both Miami and Nashville will just pick their players having made no deals with teams that relate to the draft, eg agreeing not to take anyone, or not to take specific unprotected players. I don't remember it ever having worked this way.

I just switched 2019 to 2018 in the url and got last year's:
and it says the same thing.... Yet there were trades. So maybe it's talking about player trades?
I don't ever remember there being trades _during_ the drafts, but I do remember _after_ the draft that teams did trades.

Thanks for checking that. Maybe what they do is hold the public announcements of trades made that have expansion draft components until the draft? Could be what I think I'm remembering.

Are we now exempt from the next expansion draft?
