MLS Playoff Race - 2019

wow.. galaxy defense is leaky as hell.

Minnesota at home is a force. at #2 right now, they are sitting in a good spot to make a long run in the playoffs with their home performance.

Galaxy are in stoppage time in a tie game and somehow let Vancouver break two on their keeper from basically midfield.

Kinda wanna let Philly beat us decision day. Would much rather ATL have to play Toronto in the first round. Pretty much anything to not meet Atlanta in the conference finals.

The battle at the bottom of the West will be most interesting, but San Jose's recent bad fortune leaves them with a very difficult path. The Earthquakes will make the playoffs if they beat Portland in Portland, but that's a tough task (even given the Timbers recent struggles). San Jose might also slip in with a tie if Dallas loses at home to Sporting KC and Colorado fail to beat LAFC by 2 goals.

The West race behind LAFC is also interesting. Seattle and Minnesota are in the 2-3 spot, but the race is complicated by the fact that they play each other in the Emerald City. This opens the possibility of the Galaxy and RSL passing one or (or in LA's case) both of these teams. LA and Salt Lake are both on the road, but against weaker teams (Houston and Vancouver, respectively).

In the East, DCU can clinch 4th place and a home playoff game by beating FC Cincy at home, which is the most favorable matchup you can get. DCU will still finish 4th if they tie or even lose, so long as NJ and Toronto fail to have a better result in their games. Both NJ and Toronto have games that are winnable but tricky - with Toronto having home field advantage in its matchup. The Red Bulls have the tiebreaker over Toronto, so anything short of a Toronto win and a Red Bulls tie or loss leaves New Jersey ahead of Michael Bradley &Co.

And the stakes are real. Assuming DC takes care of business, the 5th place team gets a trip to Washington. The 6th place team gets a trip to Philly or Atlanta. As for those two teams, Atlanta has the tiebreaker, so Philly needs to exceed their result to move into 2nd. Seems unlikely.

Also those might be the two best teams in the conference aside from us, so I'm perfectly happy to let one of them get eliminated in the first round. Then they'd have to likely go up against Philly in the next round, so we'd only get one of those 3 teams in the conference final. Definitely wouldn't mind a matchup against the D.C. Rooneys, that's probably the best matchup for us in the semis.

Our road looks to be
RB
ATL
PHIL

We can do that, we disposed of each one of them at home this year, we could do it again.

ATL and PHL would play each other, so we wouldn't go against both. we have to play someone from the west in the Final :)

I think we go:
NJ
TFC
MIN

TFC will turn it up for the playoffs and then they'll meet us and we'll get our revenge.
Minn will win at home. then at home again. then go up against the galaxy because Zlatan willed them through the first round, destroyed LAFC in el trafico second round. but runs out of gas vs Minn and so Minn move on to face us ... in yankee stadium.... Rematch of the 6 goal thriller...

and we win of course.
