MLS Stadium Update

Atlanta reschedules games because Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be late to open.

Their game against Orlando was supposed to open the new venue, but that's now been moved up a day and will be at Bobby Dodd. Two other games are going to be moved from August to a later date because the stadium wont be ready and Bobby Dodd isn't available after July.

Remember when Atlanta was going to open their nice and shiny toy vs. Orlando City for the first game at Mercedes Benz? Well that isn't happening anymore...

But this is probably the more appropriate thread.

Expanding capacity by 4,000 seats to nearly 25,000. Not nearly enough for a club with a 13,000 seat waiting list for season tickets, but they've got major space constraints there.

From today's Goalmouth email:

50m to add 4,000 extra seats? That’s $12,500 per seat, math fans. Wembley Stadium was the world’s most expensive stadium when it was built at £798m—I’ve run the numbers and conversions and that works out at $11,400 per seat. So, this expansion is more expensive per seat than Wembley, which was, need I remind you, the most expensive stadium ever.

Interesting. Using 17 home games per season, it will take them some time to recuperate all of that.

At $50/seat, it will take 15 seasons to make that back
At $75/seat, it will take 10 seasons to make that back
At $100/seat, it will take 7.5 seasons to make that back

Now obviously that doesn't consider additional concessions and whatnot, but it's not like they are going to make that money back super quickly.

Not surprised. Wembly was built by scratch on a tabula rasa. Portland is building an addition and having to Gerry-rig the new with old while improving an existing foundation.

As an aside, I thought I was going to get to check out Rio Tinto for the RSL v. FC Dallas match, but I bought my tickets before noticing that I actually fly out of SLC several hours before the match starts. Crossing my fingers for a resale.

As an aside to the aside, getting into Rio Tinto requires signing up with a very dodgy-looking web service called Flash Seats because, apparently, no paper tickets are used at all at that arena.

Saw Taylor Twellman post this about a week or so ago. Have to feel bad for Revs fans. Brutal to have a stadium in place with renderings and everything only to have it broken down. I wonder if this was done by the Krafts to say "look we're trying" to get people off their backs or if it was a real solution for their team long term. New England really has seemed like an after through all these years by the Krafts and I do feel bad for their fan base. I think I'd rather have no news of a stadium rather than getting my hopes up with an incredible design only to have my hopes smashed.

I think this was real. Kraft very publicly stated what the Revs offered and were willing to do and how it broke down due to opposition and the other side, and AFAIK none of the other parties he named denied any of it.

So the Sounders are partnering with a baseball team to build a new SSS and run their USL affiliate.

Meanwhile, in NYC, we don't have a place for our squad players to get a game. Step it up, guys.

We are definitely not innovators at this point. More like cautious followers who aren't sure of their long term strategy just yet.
