MLS Week 1 - 2018

Of course Orlando gets the first red of the season. They probably enjoy being dicks.
Orlando has had 2 VAR calls go against them already. The Red was one. The other was a handball in the box. Brndik saved the penalty.
Orlando fans are going nuts on Twitter.

MLS is back. Some thoughts from the first day so far.

Had the Toronto game on in the background. Their defenders seemed vulnerable to pace. I think Vanney will adjust quickly and we will only see that 4-4-2 when they are playing slow teams.

Didn't see Atlanta, but saw Lawrentowicz was a starting CB. I think their defensive spine is weak. Im not a fan of Parkhurst or Gonzalez-Pires. They have nobody to play defense in the midfield (Nagbe? Almiron?) I think they over performed on defense last year and it wouldn't surprise me if it averages out and they allow more goals than anyone except ...

NE went with the same defenders from last year when they allowed more goals than anyone and they are barely competent. They still have a decent attack but it looks like it will be a grim season for the Revs. Philly has some potential and can be a tough opponent on any given day.

Only saw parts of the second half of DC - Orl, but I can't remember seeing a worse performance of 11 v 10. Orlando dominated DC down a man. Acosta is by far their best player and wasn't on the field, but what I saw was terrible. They can't keep the ball. I want to see how Orlando matched up against a good team. They should be in the playoffs for the first time this year.

early doors, but here i though atlanta and toronto would be the teams to beat in the east

Highlight Playlist:

My favorite feature of MLS Live was the condensed games. IDK if MLS will do them again this year. If condensed games aren't in the ESPN+ package, I will probably not get it.

I agree. I'm cautiously optimistic that they will reinstate the 20 minute games after a revenue stream is in place to support the effort. Without that, the service is worth much less than it used to be.

Guzan isn't good. His play on that 4th goal was Saunders-esque (think against Orlando).

basically what every atlanta fan thought

Galaxy looking like they might toast our asses.

Also, can we not get VAR bundesliga style?

MLS implementation is shit.

VAR for what again? Not at all convinced Kamara was off for LAG there.

I hate MLS VAR. it’s pointless and stupid.

I haven’t checked MLS Live, but my buddy working on the transition to ESPN said they’re aware of the popularity and thinks they will keep it.

What’s the difference?

(honest question)
They do all the games from a centralized VAR booth.

The head match ref almost never actually goes to the monitor because they either reverse it or deem it unclear. I may be mistaken, but it seems they also will stop and give a penalty, without the aggrieved team having to foul someone just to hope to get a review.

If VAR's goal is to get it right, the idea that a team can escape penalty by outpacing the technology is absurd.

Anybody know why threeteams didn’t play this weekend? With the unbalanced table of teams, one will always have an off week, but the other two should have played. RB has a champions league game Tuesday, so they’re the ones I’d expect off, but Colorado doesn’t appear to have a CL game that would interfere, and Chicago isn’t in the competition.

When they announced the Home Openers in advance of the full schedule, Colorado was supposed to host Chicago on Saturday.

I don't know why they postponed it.
