Mls Week 1 Matchday Thread

Honestly, Lampard can't fix all that's wrong with our team right now.

Its going to take time, like you said, we need our guys to figure out their roles, figure out what everyone else's roles are, their habits, ect.

However, when Lampard does arrive he threatens to disrupt that a little.

Lampard obviously won't fix all that is wrong with our team, we aren't a perfect team nor do we have the budget to be a perfect team, Lampard won't come and make us a world class club. Its also way too early to say Lampard won't make us significantly better or fix a lot of our weaknesses, because well we don't really know our own weaknesses yet. We have played 1 competitive game and got a draw in-front of of 65k fans, not exactly a bad result.

Summer transfers are tricky though, so hopefully Lampard and DP3 work out. Last season New England wasn't anything special at all, and then in the summer they added Jermaine Jones as a DP and he made them the best team in the East, so hopefully we get that effect!

Watching Seattle against New England. Seattle look very sharp, and New England look worse than I expected. They haven't actually played bad, but I expected better from what I've heard.

Seattle is absolutely clowning New England right now. Dempsey and Martins are running circles.

Seattle is just so good. Martins and Dempsey is an unbelievable attacking combo.

I knew NE was without Jermaine Jones, didn't realize there was no Lee, too.

Also, Alonso is out for Seattle so they aren't without their injury concerns.

Yeah, New England is going to be looking hard for a win.

They'll likely have Lee Nguyen back, so they'll be very hard to beat. I hope Kreis learned some lessons after that first game because the Revs will be a much tougher task.

Random thoughts on the games this weekend:

Galaxy 2 Fire 0: As expected, Chicago parked the bus from minute 1. No interest in getting a goal with only Quincy in my memory going forward. Still wasn't close to enough; LAG could have had 4 goals in this one.

Union 0 Rapids 0: This game hurt my eyes. Neither of these teams are any good. Neither team looked close to getting a goal even after Burling took a red. While one might be tempted to chalk it up to defensive quality it appeared to be more offensive ineptitude of shocking order. After week 1, they looked to be the 10th best team in their respective conferences.

Of note for NYCFC fans is that Burling's red coupled with the Rapids' bye next week means Burling misses the NYCFC match in Colorado in Week 3.

DCU 1 Montreal 0: Listless game for both teams after the midweek match in the CCL; both will appreciate their coming bye.

Whitecaps 1 TFC 3: TFC got a lot of credit in the second half, but when I watched the game Sunday it appeared more that they shut down Vancouver and Vancouver didn't have a response. TFC didn't really push the ball after they went up 2-1 and only got the PK towards the end because Vancouver had pushed too far up. Seemed to me that if the 2nd half is any indication TFC wants to get a lead and then like Seattle sit and then counter into space with their terrifying trio.

Dynamo 1 Crew 0: Crew got the better chances but Deric and the post leave them without anything from this match. Good result for the Dynamo.

FCD 1 SJ 0: Kinnear has taken his defensive strategy to SJ and until the very end it looked like a 0-0 draw until SJ's keeper bungled into a loss. I'm not sure this strategy will work for SJ; Wondo is a poacher and needs opportunities; not seeing getting them too often with the way SJ played.

PTFC 0 RSL 0: Rimando is the man. If PT has Valeri, they certainly win this one as they had the majority of the chances. RSL did create few chances but they were all quality chances. Both teams needed their finishers tonight (Plata for RSL and Valeri for PT).

SKC 1 RBNY 1: I asked a friend who's an SKC fan if it was worth watching the match replay or just going highlights. He told me highlights. I took his advice lol .

Seattle 3 NER 0: Boom. Seattle is awesome and was the best team of the week. No rust except for a dangerous Evans mis-clearance that created a NER chance resulting in Frei's only work of the night. Seattle is beautiful to watch.

NYCFC perspective: Great weekend for NYCFC as most of the East dropped points to the West. While both NY teams could be pleased with their road points, the Union dropped 2 points that they'll surely miss come September/October and the Crew missed a chance against one of the presumed weaker teams in the West (and that's pre-Cubo). With the Rapids now losing a starter for their match v. NYCFC and the Revs coming into Yankee Stadium already rocked, hard to be more pleased with how the other matches went.

One thought that springs to mind reading the analysis is how little time people seem to get in US sports to establish themselves. In Europe fans are more likely (usually!!) to allow a bit of time (say a season) for people to bed into the team. I wonder if the short n sharp format of NFL etc affects expectations in MLS?

Goal of the Week?
Keane vs Chicago
Mix vs Orlando
Sam vs SKC
Barnes vs Columbus
Dempsey (2nd) vs New England
