I watched large chunks of the last 2 San Jose games. Its the first time in over 5 years its more fun than painful to watch that team.

Someone on Twitter pointed out they were +748 on the betting line. That would have been a seriously nice payout.

I have to agree, which kills me because the Seattle fans on the MLS website whine about the refs constantly. But they were poorly treated this game. Also, hard to blame Unkel, because the red card was correct by the book, but this was a very egregious example of why no exception, no intent, no context, hard line rules can suck. It was hand to face, and a ridiculous red card as a result.

Actually, I am not so sure that the red card was correct by the book. There was all kinds of talk that hands to the face is an automatic red, but that's not what the rule says. It says a "deliberate" hand to the face or head is an automatic red. The referee in fact is supposed to use judgment and try to ascertain the intent, and in this case, I think Unkel got it very very wrong.

See below from IFAB - in their FAQs, they even say that using very little force can avoid a red.

VIOLENT CONDUCT

Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.

Q5: Why is striking/hitting someone’s head or face (when not challenging for the ball) regarded as violent conduct?
There has always been an expectation from football that someone who deliberately hits someone on the head or face should be sent off – striking the head or face is potentially very dangerous so unless there is very little force used, this will be a sending-off (RC) as football must discourage this unacceptable behaviour.
