Movies

holy shit, IT was fantastic! I read the book and re-watched the original miniseries (dear god it was bad aside from Tim Curry) before going to a late showing on opening night

It is a very good film.

Not what I expected. A little bit Stand By Me with some Stranger Things with some great creepy moments.

************SPOILER**************

The funny kid with the glasses had good jokes but they were very rapid fire and sometimes seemed forced into the dialogue.

The opening scene is ridiculously good.

Watched Green Book. thought it was really good. Not sure if its oscar worth like people are claiming but definitely worth a watch.

ETA: as someone whos fluent in italian, the italian in it was really bad and cringey. However, my girlfriend who doesnt speak any Italian at all didnt seem to notice as she was just reading the subtitles.

The other day my daughter asked to borrow my NYT subscription so she could read Niki Lauda's obituary. I asked who's Niki Lauda. She told me he was a famous Formula 1 driver. I asked when did you start following Formula 1, and she said ever since she saw the movie Rush (2013) a few months ago. Apparently it's a hit with some of her engineering school buddies. I never heard of it.

Anyway, she had bought it on iTunes so I watched it yesterday. It's a Ron Howard film about the rivalry between Lauda, who was Austrian, and an English driver James Hunt. It covers how they both rose to F1 and then focuses on the 1976 F1 season. Apart from Chris Hemsworth playing Hunt, most of the male actors are supporting cast regulars, and more prevalent in European productions than American. You might recognize them from here or there but mostly not I think. Lauda is played by Daniel Brühl who I never heard of but was featured in The Alienist TV series, Inglorious Basterds, and a bit part in Captain America Civil War. A few of the women who play wives and girlfriends are better known.

But the story is very well told. If you don't already know, it is hard to guess as you are watching it who will win the 1976 championship, and even after the film ended I'm hard pressed to say whether Lauda or Hunt was the protagonist. Arguably it was their relationship, an odd but drama-friendly mix of rivalry and friendship between 2 very different personalities. Hunt was the prototypical crass and carefree playboy race car driver. Lauda was the less attractive, highly disciplined grinder. I don't know if it's available streaming anywhere without a rental fee, but I recommend it.

I'm also now kind of intrigued by F1.

Such a great movie. By father loves it. There's a scene when Lauda and his to be wife are hitchhiking as their car breaks down. They get a ride and it's an awesome scene. Though the F1 portrayed in the movie is quite different than the F1 today.

Nobody crosses Iceland, you travel around its edges.

Except my friend Justin crossed Iceland across a trail that's centuries old and almost never traveled because of the desolation and difficulty of the terrain, which includes desert, volcanos, glaciers, and rivers that pop-up, flow, change course, and then randomly disappear. He did it on a mountain bike, filmed it, and made a movie. It's 43 minutes long and you can watch it at the link. This is just, truly, awe-inspiring and beautiful.

The movie is at the link. It's really, really worth it. If possible use Airplay or Chromecast or something to watch it on a big screen. Take 45 minutes this weekend.

Rocketman

I did not like the preview when I saw it a few months ago.

This is a highly creative film with some scenes that will have you saying “wow” in your head.

Bohemian Rhapsody was great but these two films have little in common.

Just watched it during my lunch break, and it is a really nice short film of their trek. I kind of wish they had more footage of the areas they trekked through just because it looks so chaotic and gorgeous. Surreal knowing it's basically a 5-6 hour flight from JFK to Reykjavik to see this completely different world of desert and volcanoes.

mgarbowski mgarbowski which one was Justin? The big beard guy or the minimal beard guy?

I think the limited footage from the meat of the trip is because it was just the 2 of them, Justin (minimal beard guy) and Remi (big beard guy). They had some support in the first couple of legs when they started and picked it up again at the end, but in between it was just the 2 of them, and they kind of had to focus on making their next camp and staying alive, which I guess makes you less willing to stop and play with the drone for a couple of hours. I agree it would have been great to have more such footage, but I think the only way to get it would have been to make it a completely different journey with a much larger group, and some sort of motorized support.

But thanks for watching and glad you liked it. Iceland is on every photographer's bucket list including mine, but I won't be doing anything like that.

I spent a week in Iceland last year (going around, not through) and I have to say it was simply amazing. And going around and noting on the map the roads where you were contractually not allowed to take your rental car has definitely increased my desire to go back again. That and the pastry, of course. I'll upload a photo set over the weekend. While watching this movie, I suppose.
