Movies

Uncut Gems was amazing.

The thread is better than the article:

If it’s supposed to be a realistic film about sports betting, it failed miserably.

If it’s supposed to be a film about a gambling addict, it did so, but I did not feel particularly moved.

The ending was quite good but some things, like the ridiculously loud opening music carrying on while I’m trying to comprehend dialogue, was inexcusable.

Watched two decent but not brand new horror or horrish movies recently.

The Witch and Split both from 2016 I think. Worth a watch.

Did you see Hereditary and/or Midsommar? Both are pretty wild.

I'm not sure I have access to either of those yet? I watched The Witch on Netflix and I took Split from the library on DVD (I know oldschool but the only streaming/on demand I had available for split was edited and the library is very close to my apartment )

Hereditary was 2018, Midsommar 2019. Not sure where they are now available but both worth a watch if you can get them.

"Soccertown" is a documentary about the 1990 World Cup and the town of Kearney, New Jersey which contributed 3 players to that team. The movie makers' distribution plans have been destroyed by the virus, so they have put a modified, not quite full cut up on Youtube. It's not the whole thing but it is over an hour. I've skimmed and it looks good, and plan to watch the whole thing soon.

I'm 20 minutes in to the Snyer Cut and it's immeasurably better than the original Justice League.
ETA I'm not a Snyder fan for the most part.

better than the original justice league is not a very high bar. i mean... you just took a break from it so you could post on this forum. :p

With a 4 hour run time. That’s one film that will require numerous breaks.

random fact 643: Btw did you know the reason 90-120 min films/plays are so popular is it mimics the amount of time of our REM cycles.

So there's no point comparing 2 versions of the same movie if the first was disappointing?

No, I stopped because I was too busy yesterday to start watching until it was already past the time I usually stop watching TV and start winding down towards bed. I planned to check it out for 5 minutes and get a bare sense of how it felt but it held me longer than that for 20-30 minutes.

It might disappoint. With the 4 hour run time it's probably at least 45 minutes too long. But so far it confirms my view that splitting creative control over projects mid-way can almost never work. JJ Abrams or Rian Johnson could have made a good Star Wars trilogy, or maybe they could have collaborated, but taking turns with complete control over their own parts with no actual collaboration, they screwed it up. And that should have been obvious from the outset. When a family tragedy forced Snyder to take a break from his career, DC should have handed it over to one of his assistants or some professional but low ego, no-name director and told them to finish it consistently with Snyder's vision. By giving it to Whedon they assured they would get the hybrid mess of overwrought demigod imagery with incongruous cleverness that they released in 2017. They should have finished his trio, then asked Whedon or whoever to start making the MCU clone series they tried to shoehorn into something that was almost finished and could never work.

My reply was honestly an attempt at a joke that clearly failed miserably! my apologies.

Didn't hurt the original Star Wars trilogy!

i do want to watch it but don't have access to HBO max at the moment. I have a trial code I've been waiting to redeem for when I have the time to do some binge watching.
Set aside some time. As someone on Twitter said yesterday "I don't know why they call it the Snyder cut when it looks like he didn't cut anything."
