New England (Home) - Postmatch

I just watched Arena's post game presser... lol. the guy couldnt just answer questions like a professional. it was just snarky remarks and basically just letting the reporters answer their own questions. he's obviously upset with the red card. he didn't mention anything about the PK and not sure anybody can really say it wasn't one. I think the red was soft because it wasn't given for the violent foul, but for dogso. taty wasn't exactly in on goal... so that red probably should have stayed a yellow. that being said, the ref was completely all over the place today and the major calls that influenced the game just happened to go in our favor. i'll take it ... considering we've been screwed so often by refs in this league.

overall - MLS refs have got to be the worst in the world. I swear there are youth or rec league refs who are better.

Dome said in his post game presser Maxi will be suspended for TFC... so someone has the incorrect info? question is who...

Arena's always been that way. He's a jerk.

Referee was absolutely a shambles today. Just terrible. Might be the worst officiated game I've seen, and that's saying something. The DOGSO shouldn't have gone to VAR as it wasn't clear and obvious, the ridiculous foul and yellow cards -- then he misses the clear-as-day PK at the death. The worst officiated game I've ever seen in MLS. And that's saying something. As you said, the refs in this league are so bad. The league is getting better, but the referees have not.

Someone probably thought that the consecutive appearances for Good Behavior Reduction must be starts. His 2nd reduction (i.e. the 5th clean game) was when he was subbed on vs. Houston in the 78th minute.
Way to game the system

Man, really sucks that we dropped some points in the beginning to Minnesota and Orlando or we’d firmly be right there with LAFC for the supporters shield.

Dome out.

Love this team. Say what you want about the quality of MLS, but our style of play is among the most fun to watch in the world.

yea. i've never liked his attitude. he looks like that asshole neighbor who everyone suspects is up to no good.
He's very prickly with the media, but people who have played for him or who know him well love the guy.

He's also done a terrific job in New England. I really don't want to get matched up against those guys in the playoffs.

Random observations.

Props to New England. What a great traveling section they had. It was like a Red Bulls game. Terrific stuff.

Mitri is progressing into the player we all want him to be. He is tracking back and fighting for the ball in midfield. He is looking to distribute more, and I think he is making good decisions with the ball. The piece that is missing is the execution. Too many of his passes are off target or have the wrong weight. I think that part of it will come, and when it does, he can add a whole new dimension to the offense.

Ref was a hot mess. He let so much physical play go, but if he called a foul, he seemed likely as not to pull out a card. It was like the below, but with yellow cards.

It was not because Univision is a national TV broadcast, so they are the only broadcast allowed. They are unimaginably bad both with the commentators and the production quality. MLS really needs to ditch them. It's so bad.

As for the game -- Mitrita was super dangerous today even if he didn't score. More performances like that from him, please.

So happy for Medina. That was his first brace for us. I love watching guys who get doubted have big games. We needed it.

I really hope Maxi isn't suspended on Wednesday -- who the hell knows at this point. Because if he is, I really don't know who we put at the 10. Mitrita? Medina? I don't think you put Parks there, and I certainly don't think Ring should go there. Interesting decision for Dome if he needs to make it.
The Uni color commentator had this great insight yesterday: “Now that they are up a man, NYCFC players need to be very careful not to get a red card and give away that advantage.”

This. For the nine minutes or so before the red card, NE was set up really well pressing NYCFC and they almost defended their way to a point being down a man for 80 minutes.

NE has lost two games since Arena was hired - this one and to LAFC. Let Atlanta deal with NE. Give me DCU or *gasp* RBNJ before NE.

What the fuck is happening over at MLS?

I checked and rechecked all the matches and his player profile. Some intern over at MLS must not be counting his 12 minute substitute appearance as part of the streak of 5 clean matches for his 2nd good behavior reduction. You think this would ever happen in the NFL? NBA? NHL? MLB?

Ok, double checked my chart. It's 100% accurate when it comes to Maxi. You're correct the the only way he's suspended is if they don't count his appearance subbing in against Houston. Otherwise, he should be clear to play vs Toronto.

So then the question is why aren't they counting it?

Agree 100% with those not wanting ne in the playoffs. They were organized and played really well. Sure we weren't at full strength defensively but they made our back line look like Swiss cheese when they had the ball. Bou/Gil combo especially but even agudelo was dribbling and toying with our guys doing Messi impressions. Luckily we were up a man and had tons of possession. Arena also went full defense to try to get a point so that helped. Had they kept a full squad and played how they wanted, it would have been a very different game. I still think we would have come up on top, but it would have been a lot tighter on the field rather than the attacking mayhem we unleashed on them.

Shout to GMS for playing a decent LB.

I prefer him there then Sweat. It highlights his strengths (crossing, effort, positional awareness) and doesn’t force him to do anything he can’t do (pretty much everything else)

The published Disciplinary Rules don't say anything about a minimum minutes threshold for a game to count towards the good behavior total, but I wonder if there might be one. Something like either start or play at least 20 minutes. I'm pretty sure that playing a partial game can count and has counted in the past, but I could not say whether those appearances were as low as 12 minutes. And we know MLS has more rules than are published publicly.

Well then why aren't we screaming at them to give us the reason?

Yet another game filled with yelling at poor refereeing decisions.... As people have said, needing VAR to tell you that a foul was by the last man and merited a red card when we could all see it, then dishing out a yellow card for an equally obvious header, and all the random niggly yellow cards he dished out... guy really needs to find another line of work.

Thought overall the team did ok, but it breaks my heart to say that GMS was hot garbage. DIdn't pass forward, too many stray passes, no one on one dribbles or crosses. Rightly hooked towards the end and I hope he steps up soon. New Yorkers demand a high level of quality and he has to realise it - none of this come in and do a little bit of work for the team and hope it's ok malarkey. Gotta show more energy, put in more tackles, make more runs, want the ball more, show some sparkle.

And whodathunk that ol' Medina would be the hero of the night?

Most of the whining from the Revs side was about the ninth minute red card. From the 200 section you could see that Delamea pushed Taty from behind and there was no player between Taty and the goal. A defensive player should not do something that stupid.

There was at least two times a NE attacker took the ball down into the corner and wasted a ton of time holding off Sweat as he failed over and over to get it away, only for GMS to come and knock it out almost immediately. I agree they should try GMS at LB, he has a high work rate on defense and it gets him on his preferred left side without displacing Mitri.
