Considering getting this for the kids (10 and under) this holiday.

Since I am a solid, dues paying member of #team50, I am completely ignorant of game platforms and the choices involved.

Any advice? Nintendo Switch seems the good option for younger kids.

Any thoughts on good games?

Not a Switch owner, nor a Zelda fan, but Breath of the Wild is the game that virtually everyone with a Switch bought it for. Also, I've got no idea what the reviews are like but I believe that Nintendo either have or soon will release the sequel to Splatoon, which is another very kid-friendly game.

Either way, if you don't know the games and you're buying for someone else I'd always recommend reading a few reviews, or maybe checking out what Youtube thinks of the games.

Don't own a Switch but a number of my friends and co-workers do. We are all team mid-30s. Nintendo seems to be going hard after the nostalgia market with the Zelda and Mario releases. That said the new Mario brothers from what I've seen looks fun and very kid friendly as does the Mario Kart that is out for the system.

I have a switch. Definitely Mario Kart. Maybe Splatoon too. Resident Evil's coming out at the end of the year although it's maybe a bit gory for under-10s. There's also Snipperclips Plus. Don't have it but it's supposed to be hilarious, and played together cooperatively with multiple people.

Team30 checking in. Amazon had $10 off the Zelda game, so the logical thing I had to do was buy a 300 system to lock in that sweet sweet savings. Spend money to make money amirite?

Anyway, I always intended on getting the game/system as I am a zelda fanboy. It was never available so I just kept waiting but that $10 off just spurred me to action. The system is still on backorder so I will be waiting for who knows how long, but i will eventually be able to play it and give you a real review.

It's a great system that has so much potential. Zelda is the game to own on it. I've completed it and still have a bunch of stuff to do. Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2 are distant seconds in the must own category.

Buy it. Your children will love it.

I was going to come in, but this basically covered it.

If your kids will want to play FIFA, Madden or 2K the switch won't cut it. Stripped down versions with no online play. They will be made fun of.

Was going to post something similar. It seems pretty hardcore nerd. Definitely don’t think it’s a legit replacement for console gaming you’re hardcore into that scene, and the same likely goes for PC gamers.

D_RoyJenkins D_RoyJenkins might know more.

ETA: well shit. What Fred said.

Thanks everyone. I think it's pretty clear that the system has drawbacks compared to xBox and PS, but the portability is a big plus. Most of all, the system is probably the sweet spot for the 10 and under crowd. The Mario titles seem to be great for that age. The kids aren't going to be playing the shooter games for a while. My son is probably going to be interested in FIFA, and it sucks that the game isn't as good on the Switch, but that's EA Sports which seems to exist only to turn good games into piles of shit, extracting gold as a byproduct of the process.

You may be saving yourself lots of micro transaction dollars, too. As you note.

Fred Jr. plays a ton of FIFA and 2k, but rarely spends money. The key is the ability to play online against friends and randoms. That takes up most of his time and, to him, is the most important feature of the game.

I've been tuned out of Nintendo for years, I'm more of a PlayStation guy

If you want your kids to be able to play against each other buy a switch, if you want your kids to be able to play against other people and generally have a broader selection of popular games buy something else.

i have both a playstation and a switch and you really cant compare the 2 systems theyre both great in their own ways. Between Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey the switch has been more than worth its money for the amount of time ive put into it. I also have Mario Kart and while good it wasnt as great as some of the MK games of the past in my opinion. The joy of the switch is that it doesnt have the same kind of graphics or online play as the other 2 big consoles BUT Nintendo always seems to turn out some fun G rated games for everyone. Add to that you can bring it with you anywhere u go and the system is a winner.

Like others have said FIFA wont be as good as it doesnt run on the frostbite engine and you wont have online play, but its still fun if you just want to play some handheld soccer.

Also, Splatoon 2 is a shooter game game but not really, id probably consider it if it was my kid but ill let you be the judge of that

If you have any questions about the games or the system itself please feel free to ask.

Thanks, Jack. Splatoon looks good. I might add that to my list.

I am trying to emphasize games that they can play together vs. alone. I get the sense that Zelda is a single-player game, and to some extent so is Mario Odyssey. I think those still make the list, but other games where 2 or 4 can play are best.

Picked up a switch last week with mariokart and Zelda (have only played kart so far).

Any good game recs?

I bought splatoon2 digital copy, I didn't enjoy it. I wish i bought it hard copy i would have given it away free.

Brilliant way to stop people from reselling their own property. Lock it to the account in a digital form. And the kicker is its the same price for digital even though the packaging and shipping would cost the developer at least a few bucks.

The joke i heard was Call of Duty is an adult shooter played by kids, Splatoon is a kid shooter played by adults. But it really wasn't fun to me, but I suppose grinding to get better weapons/specials is something to do, I just couldn't get into it. Seems alright for a kid. "Non-violent" shooter.
