Let me point out this is NOT a rumor but a thought that occurred to me in past hour. Pele is doing a book signing at a "Barnes and Noble" outlet in NY tomorrow (Tomorrow as in US time) and it reminded me that he serves as the honorary president for NY Cosmos. So I jokingly suggested to Nick Chavez that NYCFC should ask Maradona to be honorary president to see how many Cosmos fans complain. Then I considered it in deeper terms beyond that and thought about the prestige, publicity and name value.

Why Maradona people may still ask? Well my response to that is why not? Its not a corporate position so there wouldn't be any headaches (for obvious reasons) in that regard. To point out the blatantly obvious there's also no former players to choose from who have represented this club. So why not go out there and get the biggest name possible? Maradona could be persuaded if he somehow thought it would annoy Pele (though Pele most likely wouldn't care in the slightest) so that could be his incentive.

Cosmos aren't the only club of course to have created such a title. MCFC for example have seven honorary presidents at the moment (Thaksin Shinawatra used to be one but that's no longer the case) so NYCFC could definitely fit one in.

As I said recently..."NYCFC: The cure for the common club!"

The SC should probably have a honorary president as well. Obviously with a realistic name perhaps somebody with a notable sports background in the New York area. It wouldn't even have to be soccer essentially but maybe just a notable name who has expressed interest in backing the club. Maybe not even someone with a sports performance background but just a fan of the sport.

I'm ok with honoring past team members with those kinds of positions, but doing it to start would be kind of cheap. I do like the idea of bringing on some other NY sports figures to help sell the team (Maybe Jeter? He'll be free next year. Yeah Jeets!).

While yes Maradona was a great player, and has done a lot for Argentina. He's probably the worst possible candidate to be an honorary president for NYCFC, or any other team in the US. He has repeatedly throughout the years let it be known he is anti American. He hates America and everything it stands for, (his words). While what he thinks of us doesn't bother me one but, the man's been a train wreck his while life. I definitely wouldn't want to see him represent us.

It wasn't an April fool posted it yesterday. If it was then I would have pretended it was a rumor or he had been given such a position. Forgot all about the anti-US statements so that pretty much makes the chances a big fat zero. Still they could do it with another massive global name. Cruyff could work given his Dutch roots. He actually had a role with the Mexican Chivas in an executive role so taking on a honorary role with NYCFC wouldn't be unrealistic. Or even something beyond that as there's not the same corporate issues Maradona would have brought.

He will know Soriano and Begiristain too so they could put his name forward to Pernetti, Reyna and co.

But it´s kind of hard to have a honorary anything without having been in existence for some time..

This is true, but except for Thaksin, the Honorary President role has always been reserved to reward a long-serving senior official for their commitment to the club. That said, I wouldn't oppose this happening - though I'd prefer it not be Maradona. I still haven't forgiven him for the Hand of God...
