Let's get this started right.

David Villa heaps praise on Kwadwo Poku ahead of new NYCFC season

“The growth of this kid and his desire to get better—I’ve seen very few players in my career like this,” Villa said. “Obviously he is young and needs to learn more things with respect to physical conditioning, but if we can help him he will be incredible in the future.”

How is this still a thing?
Might really be tiring out and not able to go a full 90. If he exerts too much energy early on in training/game and goes too hard then he might be sluggish towards the end.
We have some older guys on the team who are starting so we can't be starting a young guy with the expectation that he'll have to be subbed off.
I think when it comes to Poku it's more a reference to pacing himself and endurance related. If players notice it too then it must be something that he really does need to work on and not just a JK excuse.

This quote is interesting as well: “The most important thing in your career is to win titles,” said Villa. “I want the fans to be happy. I want to play here a few more years and leave people with a good memory of me and what I do on the field.”

Added emphasis on a few more years. I think Villa - who has 2 more years on his contract is probably interested in staying on after his current contract expires. Not a couple more years - but a few more years. This isn't just an exercise in semantics. I think that Villa starting an academy here in Puerto Rico - is another indication of him wanting to stay on this side of the Atlantic for awhile.

This is pure speculation, but I could imagine the decision for him being somewhat binary. He has small kids. If the kids settle well here over the term of the initial contract, you could imagine him staying for an extended period rather than uprooting them from school, etc. But, if the kids have trouble adapting, then you could imagine him getting out as soon as his contract runs. I say this all without knowing much about his personality, but it strikes me as reasonably likely that it will, at least in part, inform his decision.

Of course, I imagine the question of whether we win this year and next year as opposed to being mediocre and him getting killed as a sole strike could also play in.

Pacing is one thing Poku can immediately work on, but endurance is another completely different beast to tackle. Some athletes just do not have good endurance no matter what they do in training (to a point) - that has to do with the type of slow-twitch (endurance) versus fast-twitch (speed/power) muscle fibers their muscles are primarily made up of. Poku appears to be resoundingly in the fast-twitch category - lots of power and explosiveness but can't maintain it.

I was never impressed with the fitness coaches last season as there were always improbable soft-tissue injuries developing among the team outside of matches; my guess is those coaches were 1-program-fits-all type trainers. Hopefully PV brings in some staff that understand the way to develop the recessive slow-twitch fibers in a fast-twitch athlete, and Poku buys in to the methods. Hell, sign me up and I'll take him on runs every weekend and after work - Midas Mulligan will just have to gracefully negotiate my baby-care absences with my wife, and hopefully with more tact than he sometimes slings around here. Might as well add Lampard to my little group too - preemptive measures.

well yeeeaaaaah, it is the forums. it is uncut raw speculation coming to you live from my office in between meetings.

We're sitting here watching the 6:00 O'Clock News and during the sports report on CBS Channel 2 they actually did a piece on the PV presser. It was maybe about 30 seconds or so, but it was 30 seconds or so more than I expected to see on tv.

I scared the living snot out of my wife and daughter when I let out a loud "HOLY SHIT" when the NYCFC logo came on screen.

About time considering we draw more people on average than any NBA or NHL team, 11 MLB teams and 17 out of the 120 MLS teams
