NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2019

Philly is improved. They’re putting a lot of faith in their CBs taking a leap. There’s no reason they can’t as both have the potential to be playing in a Top 5 league in the next 18 months. If Farfan is healthy, it’s an incredible acquisition.

But there’s a much lower floor for Philly. I think we have a much higher floor than anyone outside of NJRB and Atlanta, even if our ceiling isn’t that great.

First Power Ranking are out, and NYCFC does a little better than it does in the individual analyst predictions for placement in the East. There the average ranking was 6.83, so 7 rounded off. Here it is 11th overall and 5th in the East. Atlanta, RB, DC and Columbus place ahead, as well as SKC, LAFC, Seattle, Portland, Dallas, and the Galaxy from the West.

I think Columbus takes a massive step back. Berhalter squeezes every ounce of talent out of those guys
I'm surprised how little respect Berhalter is getting when the MLS gang assumes Porter will just step in and improve on GB's results. I think the only argument in favor of that analysis is superficial: Porter won MLS cup and Berhalter has not, and it was head-to-head, so there. But GB consistently got above expected results from his squad year after year, which Porter never did.

The lack of consistency in how they apply their arguments from team to team is pretty weak.

DC upgraded their defense with a Boca Juniors player, Jara, and they brought in a midfield utility player in McCann. They also grabbed a very capable backup GK in Seitz. Throw in two HG players.

It’s not as if their Offense needed many adjustments since they scored more than we did, so adding a starting defender, utility midfielder, and GK should pay dividends to lowering their GA.

Bravo was a Boca Jr. player, I don't know anything about Jara just pointing out that all Boca Jr. players are not difference makers.

IDK if there's a vid with all of them. But Doyle has no confidence in Dome. Warshaw I think pointed to Villa and Herrera. And I haven't watched the other team stuff but I think they think Philly improved. The DC reasoning is obvious, even if you disagree. I can't figure out why Columbus or Chicago.

I agree the predictions are harsh. In an attempt the play devil's advocate I will say both Villa and Herrera had quality to their game that is much higher than what is typically seen in MLS so I can see someone that watches from afar talking themselves into both being irreplaceable losses. I also don't think many of us disagree that Dome didn't really produce results and there should be serious questions about his ability to lead this team entering the season.

All that said the defense and most of the roster is intact a regression of the magnitude all are predicting seems crazy.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it really does seem like a concerted effort at MLS media to shit on us.

For not one of them to think we can be top three seems suspect.
I understand your take on this, but never underestimate the power of an echo chamber. They all talk to each other. They reinforce one another's ideas. Once one of them trends in a direction it is easy for the others to follow. Plus, making predictions this year that exactly line up with last year's end results makes for boring reading. I don't think it's a grand conspiracy. I think it's just human nature.

I know -- you just figure someone would go the other way even as a calculated try for a potential I told you so.

I don't think it would be mandated by the League, just them getting together to troll us.

True. But Jara had nearly twice the number of appearances (nearly 20 vs 10 per year) and as an outside back, chances are good those are starts as opposed to subs as a DMid.

We barely won with Dome after he settled in. And still haven’t established any sort of winning consistency . So apply the same logic to us that you’re applying to DC - at least they know a home match is 3pts in the bag, Dome ended our home dominance.

And Philly was pretty solid the end of last season, albeit they were unfortunate to get us as last match and then first of playoffs, but they were a very hot team the second half of the season.
It’s also fair to expect Philly’s super young defenders to improve.

ETA: oops. I see K Kjbert made this point already.

I think the other factor playing into people questioning how they all rate us so lowly is that not many folks doing that have likely watched a lot of MLS over a longer period of time than NYCfc’s existence.

If you bring the perspective that foreign managers who fail early usually continue failing, it makes it far more understandable. And since they have to fill space and time for a living, they can’t all parrot Doyle and say some spin on “we think Dome is kind of a train wreck until he proves otherwise”.

Do we really have a large Romanian community? Where are they?
