NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2019

Predictions
  • Ben Baer: 7th in East
  • Calen Carr: 6th in East
  • Charlie Davies: 7th in East
  • Matt Doyle: 8th in East
  • Bobby Warshaw: 8th in East
  • Andrew Wiebe: 5th in East
MLS Digital makes it sounds like it will be a bleak season. I think we have one of the most talented rosters. It's just a matter of getting to make it work.

8 is unrealistic. We have too many good players to be that bad. Herrera didn't play and Villa wasn't the same. Lewis and Sands should be better. Mitrita has skills. Everyone else is higher on Medina than I am, but I'd like to think there's improvement here regardless. I think we have a better team than last year. I think we finish 3rd , even a little closer to 2nd than last year.

Is the Manager a component of the Roster (with an asterisk)? I ask that because as we’ve seen with ManU this season, a crappy manager can drag down a talented roster of players. A Manager can easily doom a season, and we don’t have a talisman former player with any coaching experience to call upon to right a listing ship.

Our roster has serious issues at striker/CF and we didn’t upgrade the other positions, so as of now it’s hard to see how we should give the benefit of the doubt to finishing above 3rd, and we had the possibility of finishing 6th the last two matches of 2018, so anybody ignoring that should stop eating the optimistic brownies and figure on disappointment first. That way you’ll be pleasantly surprised if the team eaks out wins.

Mitrita is the 3rd most expensive acquisition in mls history. Is it ok to expect him to perform at or close to the level of an Almiron? I know it’s nuts, but I think it is fair.

Maybe not quite that level, because Almiron's end value was approaching $30m, he was about the best case scenario in a big acquisition. However he should immediately be an MLS best XI player from day one, anything less than that is a bust for the money.
Due to his age, he is almost certainly not selling for any significant profit in two years.

NYC's average is Sixth.
Chicago, Montreal and Toronto had the biggest variances (by eye).
Atlanta and RB the most consistency (again by eye).
Two people putting Philly third is my biggest surprise.

people over estimating this DC Home game run last year, the barely won away games, plus this will be full year for rooney see how he adjusts.

lol how is philly higher? this cannot be because of Fabian only, especailly knowing his injury history, i still believe he wont play all games and there will be spurts of him missing games.

We barely won with Dome after he settled in. And still haven’t established any sort of winning consistency . So apply the same logic to us that you’re applying to DC - at least they know a home match is 3pts in the bag, Dome ended our home dominance.

And Philly was pretty solid the end of last season, albeit they were unfortunate to get us as last match and then first of playoffs, but they were a very hot team the second half of the season.

hot and still lost, i see nothing that makes them "better" than us this year.

as for DC its a new year, there is tape now on rooney based teams their element of surprise is gone, now coaches can see what they face.

we are missing pieces for sure and still question mark on coach but same can be said about others in various ways. thats why i said its even-ish after RB and ATL. i still dont see it as we automatically done and have no hope to not make playoffs. its the MLS shit happens.

this is not 2015 quality team nor coaches

playing two away games in a row is not easy, even for a hot team.

tape isn’t going to help teams when his technical ability is better than the defenders facing him - plus teams had a ton of tape on him last year since DC back loaded their matches for when the stadium and DP (Rooney) arrived.

were not automatically done nor are we automatically winners. But all things being equal with regard to roster improvements for 2019, those other teams all had better 2nd halves of 18 than we did, so there are two trends you’re actively choosing to ignore.

You’re absolutely right! I’m not sure Dome is even a 2015-level Manager. He hasn’t shown it yet.

you making it sound like to and from philly was 4 hour flights. 2 hrs on bus. getting home from work is just as bad. to me it was their inexperience that hurt them and it showed. i still dont see it them being ranked higher than us.

if everyone else improved like you said then they have better players to try and deal with Rooney and Co. they all had an offseason to get better rosters etc. plus this will be ronney first full season dealing with all the travel and all the artificial turf and things like that DP's all hate.

again, i dont see them vastly improving ( excluding RB and ATL obviously) . If anything montreal got more dangerous offensively and not piatti dependent. Orlando maybe with their new coach are now going to do better with those preseason results but those analysts dont see it that way.

I do think we were top three in east past couple of years, if anything other teams caught up thats it. so this year will be a battle, so we got younger. now if Dome can figure out will be seen soon enough. Kreis still worse coach until dome proves to me otherwise this year.

No, I wrote that it was two away matches. If you think playing away is easy, then you just killed your own view of DC (two posts back) of not playing well away from home. Which is it?

You second paragraph is non-sensical. DC also go better.

You’re third paragraph stumbles over itself since you’re admitting two teams did get better.

Your fourth paragraph admits other teams have caught up while also admitting Dome hasn’t figured it out. You may want to rethink things with those pieces of evidence you entered into the record.

im going back to what you said that teams got better, when i dont think its true. IF teams got better they can deal with DC more than this year. how did DC get better?

you said team is hot, when a team is hot it dont matter home or away and they were not at least not to me.

they caught up in overall quality to us fighting for third. FO didnt get anyone spectacular so we all even, so its up to Dome to figure this out with the younger squad. we never had this young a squad so yes he has to figure it out.

DC upgraded their defense with a Boca Juniors player, Jara, and they brought in a midfield utility player in McCann. They also grabbed a very capable backup GK in Seitz. Throw in two HG players.

It’s not as if their Offense needed many adjustments since they scored more than we did, so adding a starting defender, utility midfielder, and GK should pay dividends to lowering their GA.

Since there is zero chance I am going to watch these guys discuss, can you let me know what their general reasoning was? Is it that we lack the talent after Villa and Herrera left? or is it that we just haven't looked very good under Dome?

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it really does seem like a concerted effort at MLS media to shit on us.

For not one of them to think we can be top three seems suspect.

IDK if there's a vid with all of them. But Doyle has no confidence in Dome. Warshaw I think pointed to Villa and Herrera. And I haven't watched the other team stuff but I think they think Philly improved. The DC reasoning is obvious, even if you disagree. I can't figure out why Columbus or Chicago.
