NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2021

followup to the power rankings.. linked to the timestamp. otherwise, jump to 18:35

Doyle mentions "sebatian rodriguez" looks like he's coming. Think he meant Santiago. but again - i don't think Doyle knows anything more than we do.

It is funny to hear him talk about us and say things like "this team is better than their record says" when he picked us not to make the playoffs beginning of the season... yes a lot has changed since then, but for the most part, many of our new signings have not played much if at all.

abramowitz says toward the end he expects us to pick a DP in the summer and should be a 9 or a 10.
Nice to see Doyle calling himself out here, saying how wrong he was on the team. :p

...Some of this forum could use that sort of humbleness sometimes heh (may or may not also talk about me)

I think the team has surprised just about everyone who isn't on the inside. This board - me included - had very few optimists through early April. But it was striking to see both Doyle and Wiebe not just say positive things about the team but agree with Abramowitz when he said NYC is a top 3 favorite to win MLS Cup.

if we could just win a playoff game....

MLS Power Rankings has NYCFC in 4th place but ESPN has NYCFC in 10th, which is interesting because I have been reliably informed that the MLS beat writers and entire digital team all hate NYCFC.
And the data nerds at 538 have us as the highest rated MLS team by a decent margin.

On their Soccer Power Index, we have a rating of 51.8. LAFC is second at 48.9. Seattle, their favorite for Supporters' Shield & MLS Cup, is third at 47.9. We are second for the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup because of the points lead that Seattle (and to some extent New England) have over us.

I think the MLS analysts are looking at data more than ever before and this is driving their rating of NYC as well. But they temper it with results and I think have a higher recency bias. And that's why NYC jumped up this week in the MLS rankings even though the team had its worst game by almost every data metric.

OK, this has nothing to do with NYCFC or MLS or even soccer, but it does perfectly demonstrate the uselessness of media sports rankings and predictions for all purposes except clicks, outrage, and only sometimes almost by accident occasionally useful discussion points:

The only sports prognostication I have ever trusted was by Paul the Octopus (RIP Paul).

power ranking discussion this week about us (link is to correct time or skip to 9:35):

Ian does say something that for some reason irks me: "Taty isn't a striker, he's not a #9".

Why isn't he? His holdup play is exactly what you want out of a #9, his movement in and around the box is exactly what you want out of a #9. Maybe you can say he hasn't been as effective at finishing as you would like from a #9 (I think that will turn around).

But even buying that he is an ineffective finisher and weighing that heavily, that to me says he's an ineffective #9 more-so than he isn't a #9. His skill set doesn't translate to any other position.

THANK YOU. He’s a #9. He’s just not very good. Maybe you can teach finishing. But it goes back to my Talles Magno bitching and moaning. As a fan, I don’t want to wait for these guys were investing in to figure it out (or not). Especially when you’re using special roster allocations and especially when you’re expecting one of them to lead the line for 90 minutes.

you screwed because "wait and see" is the CFG plan for nycfc.

We kinda agree then. I do happen to think he's very good and he's just had an unlucky streak with finishing and think it'll get turned around.

With his movement and work rate, I seriously think he could be a top scorer in this league.

And with his stamina. He's started every match and been subbed out only three times, at the 75, 89, and 72 minutes.

As usual, link to the correct time, otherwise skip to 45:17. ExtraTime talking about us and asking - "did NYCFC have a statement win?"
