NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

Don't shoot the messenger.

Giuseppe Rossi is in contact with MLS, according to his agent. We need a CF. I'm so sorry.

As a relatively new soccer fan, and not one who really follows Europe much, can someone explain exactly why we wouldn't want Rossi?

He has injury problems, that's it. He was a very good player and had a lot of potential. If he stayed healthy and played for the U.S. he could have been the best American player we've had. He f'd up. Played with Italy when they were a top club and couldn't crack the lineup. At the same moment in time the U.S. could have really used him. He's worth getting at the right price with the hope that he stays healthy. I would have to pass on him for NYC. Maybe another team can take a chance on him, not us though.

If we take him at this point, he would have to be a TAM player (unless CFG has sold the team to Phil Anschutz). At reasonable TAM wages, Rossi may be worth it. It all depends on how his medical checks out. Zlatan was a TAM player last year, and while Rossi is no Zlatan, the Galaxy showed there is room to bring in someone coming off injury if you can get the wages right.

1) we should never have any TAM left over. We should be spending all of it. If we’re not, that’s unacceptable

2) what has Rossi done to deserve guaranteed money at this point? I’m ok signing him, but he should be getting paid what Seb Ibeagha made last year

I’d be ok signing him to a minimal contract like Ibeagha’s with escalation bonuses tied to the discretionary TAM, not the regular TAM allotment. Play in 24 matches $100k, 28 another $100k, score 10 goals, $200k, 15 another $100k, 10assists $100k. Something like that or similar variation.

Remember that TAM can only be used if the player was receiving over the max budget charge. So if we were to pay him a base similar to Ibeagha's last year, the minimum escalation bonus would have to cover about $460k.

ETA: I do like the creative idea though. It's a clever way to take a chance on a high risk/high reward player and use some of that discretionary TAM. I don't know enough about Rossi to have an opinion on whether its worth it for him, but I dig the idea.

Concept only. I’ll be sure to give it some closer thought, or not, when I get off the subway.

Yeah, I like it. I provided an edit to my post getting into that a bit, but it's likely you had already quoted me before my edit went through.

When healthy, he was really effective and talented, playing as both a withdrawn striker and advanced midfielder. If there was a guarantee he would not be a hospital ward player, I’d take a flier on him in a heartbeat. He definitely has an attitude, but I always took it to be because of his skill set in the form of a swagger. But it’s that very likely injury risk that makes him a risk that could hurt ROI.

Yeah, sue me, but I'd be excited if we brought him in on a TAM deal. Would prefer a one-year deal with club option, but I'd speculate a 2-year would be negotiated.

Rossi has the skill set to team up with another striker, like Mitrita, in a two forward setup - was very good in tight spaces and both running off the ball and ghosting in late to the box. If healthy, that could be the basis of a four attacker (2 striker|2 wing) spread. Granted, he’d be one LGP tackle away from amputation, so look both ways before entering the box.

If we’re not going to spend the TAM anyway, I can stomach us wasting it on him for one year.

A two year deal? No way

1 year deal would be perfect but unfortunately I think he still thinks he can cash in here. He always said if he comes to MLS, it's to play for NY or NJ...but I doubt at a discount. That being said he's currently training with Man U and has been linked to a few PL teams, true or not...idk. I bet he plays 2 more years in Europe and then tries to come here, which then I hope he gets snubbed.

Right and that's why I see him staying in Europe a few more years. He's 'young enough' and worth the gamble for a club that's got the money to make mistakes. We don't have that luxury.
