This is a hard pass for me , I don't want ANY 35 year old player on NYCFC , Lets find a 27-28 year old DP midfielder . Let's not chase past their prime players!!!!

That’s laughable.

Just go sign Kompany for a year and a half

And also wasn't it in 2017 when Pirlo had the famous quote advising De Rossi not to come yet, because he wasn't as finished as him and still had something to offer in more competitive leagues in Europe?

"I would advise him to change scenery," Pirlo told Sportitalia. "He's young and he can still play in one of Europe's leagues, while at the same time it is still early for him to come to America. He can still play at the highest levels."

How do you know if a player doesn’t give a shit about winning at his current club? He advises players he thinks are talented to play elsewhere.

It was a popularity signing. He was going to retire. He came for the money and NYC experience. He was declining physically and mentally checked out after the 15 UEFA final loss to Barca. A business signing and it worked for them. His body language on the pitch matched his don't give a shit sentiment.

MLS was close to shaking that "retirement league" moniker, but attendance is challenging that. Guess we aren't at a "change-of-scenery" level league yet either. Baby steps lol

i know ive made this point before and its always taken poorly. but i dont think Pirlo didnt give a shit. I felt he ran harder for NYC than he ever did in his entire European and National team career. We just weren't a fit for him and he wasnt a fit for us.

On top of that i dont think his view of playing in Europe vs MLS is wrong. But as MLS fans we dont want to hear it especially from one of our players/former players.

At minimum, hearing that sort of thing from one our players goes a long way toward reinforcing the idea that player doesn’t care. I mean, did we ever once hear a genuinely positive quote from Pirlo, anything more than canned PR?

yes. i specifically remember him saying a ton of great things about playing here and about our city. i dont have the quotes off hand but im sure if i really wanted to i could find them.

EDIT: one i quickly found

"I never had any doubts. I wanted MLS. I'd followed it on TV, and I liked it. And being able to play in New York did the rest. I don't know if I would have accepted an offer from any other city. "

I don't have anything personal against Pirlo, but I think his level of play for us fluctuated between bad and abysmal almost since day 1. I cannot explain it, and I think it goes beyond pace or the need to run. Maybe the pitch size at YS? The truth is his corner kicks, long-ball switches and free kicks were usually way off the mark, which was the complete opposite of what you would have expected of Pirlo. His whole tenure was a head-scratcher for me, as if Bad Pirlo the arch-nemesis had been shipped here while Good Pirlo was somewhere else, sipping Campari and working on his tan.

Player/coach/something --- would you take Kompany for anything in NYC? Available now.

"An announcement on Vincent’s next steps will follow imminently."
