NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

I have no problems with a midsummer DP arrival for the right guy. We basically played with 2 DPs last year, notwithstanding Medina's very sporadic contributions. Bonus that it guarantees that my hobbyhorse club stat (never having a season in which at least one DP does not miss 10 games) gets another year, and the club could still very well finish the season with its best DP contingent in terms of concurrent contributions.

And if we can transfer Medina this winter to remove any fire sale drama that's all the better.

Not to mention that we are likely losing our second striker mid-season this year, Taty. Swapping in Mertens would be awesome.

I'm also just going to drop use of current roster rules, things might look drastically different under the new CBA.

Ok. Granted that this was in reference to being a draw for a big name coach, but ...
Am I the only one who thinks living in NYC is a substantial reason?
Yes. Some players (and wives) will want a sunshiny locale like South Beach. But plenty will be drawn to the Big Apple.

we just have to hope Mertens and Heber can build a solid relationship like Taty and Heber.

If you had to choose between getting a DP similar to Mitrita (heavy transfer fee, developing player from smaller league/South America) now in the winter or keeping a DP spot open until the summer and getting Mertens, what would you prefer?

I would go for Mertens. As far as the 6 month wait goes, it's likely that the first category DP takes time to get used to the league anyway and isn't 100% productive in those first 6 months, whereas it's likely Mertens would come in and make an immediate impact and have a higher ceiling anyway.

I'm not sure of his name recognition but it's definitely more than Mitri and Maxi. I'm generally for investing in the future but it's also clear that this team misses a consistent game winner who can put the team on his back and take control of the game in the mode of Pozuelo, Giovinco or Vela.

It would be nice as a fan to watch a new DP all year, but we'd be fine as a team waiting. We keep pissing the bed at the end of the year, that's when we need a game changer the most, so a summer transfer is fine for us. He would 100% produce at a Giovinco rate for us.

If they announced it today, I'd call my rep Monday and try to get my season tickets back...because of his skill level and also the fact that we are targeting the same players as top European leagues. Maybe we aren't targeting him though and he just wants to play in NYC. Which would reaffirm me canceling.

Give me more Mitris

Instead of having both, you'd rather have more Mitris? You're absolutely crazy. Mertens is a world class talent. I loathe Napoli, but I'll call it how it is. Nobody on the current roster is near his level.

We have our Mitris throughout the team. Some spots definitely need upgrading, I get that. It's time to add a top talent though. LFC had a bunch a Mitris too, until they added the best GK and defender in the game and now they're probably the best team in the world at the moment.

You can’t sell Mertens

The proper route would be to have our academy as the profit center.

Sure you don't want to lose a DP on a free transfer, but we can't expect to turn a profit on all 3 spots. A good DP can also pay for themselves by being able to take over a game on the pitch while also helping market the club off it.

Exactly. A great DP is paid with marketing money which is a sunk cost going out but repaid through other avenues. He markets the team by winning matches, by playing enlightened ball, by drawing crowds, by being the face of the club. The return isn’t seen in the transfer out, rather it’s seen in the standings, the attendance, the merchandise, and all of those things lead to enhanced TV marketability.
