NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

Our best 10 outfield players are Sands, Callens, Chanot, Ring, Parks, Maxi, Heber, Mitrita, Tinnerholm and Isi. Maybe Taty for Isi.

You need to build a formation around your best ten players.

I feel like that roster philosophy is going to result in at least a few square pegs in round holes (unless you get extremely lucky and/or lie to yourself.....Chanot better than Isi AND Taty?! C'mon man!)

I prefer teams find a system that gets the best out of their best/most impactful players (for us, I'd say that's clearly Maxi) and take it from there. I'd rather stick to a formation that brings the best results out of guys like Heber, Taty and Mitri, even if it means guys like Isi or Sands end up missing out. As much as I love them, I don't want the new boss to shoehorn them in.

I don't think this is the only way to come up with a successful formation but it's a good place to start. Realistically it's the best combination of players x formation x what the other team is doing.

Play Callens as an LB and then:

Tinny Chanot Sands Callens
Ring
Parks Maxi
Mitri Héber Isi

Callens moves in next to Ring when we are around the opposition area to control the counter attack. Probably makes more sense to have Tinny go roaming and form a 3-2 with Chanot, Sands and Callens then Ring and Keaton.

Or 4-4-2 diamond with Taty instead of Isi up front with Héber and Mitri at the tip of the diamond a la second half against Toronto.

Now we’re talking! This is what’s making me feel that the new season is warming.

Love this thread.

It’s hard to not see Taty in the starting XI but it’s a nice option to have. I am looking forward to another year where his game improves.

Looking forward to Sands back and even better in the XI. Loved so much of his game last year.

Still a bit bummed that Dome won’t be on the sidelines but excited for the 2020 campaign and looking forward to the squad elevating, illuminating and dominating.

Callens loves to go forward too. Maybe not on the left, but through the middle.

I'm wondering if we're trying to shift away from LB/RB?
Maybe they're looking at switching permanently to a 3-5-2 with LM/RM playing a more defensive role... thereby nullifying the need for a LB? I could see that happening.

Deila's system is a 4-2-3-1, according to many reports, so while I think the 3-5-2 is probably a better fit for this roster, I would think we'll at least start in a 4-2-3-1.

I think what we're most likely to see, at least at the start:

-----Heber----
Mitri--Maxi--Castellanos/Isi/GMS/Medina
---Ring-Parks----
Mata-Callens-Chanot-Tinnerholm
-----Johnson----

I really want to find a way to get Sands into the lineup, I just don't know where he fits in right now. I'm not putting him at centerback over Callens or Chanot, and I can't take Ring off the field.

We do have a ton of fixture congestion this season, so Sands will still get 20 starts or so, most likely, since he'll be spelling guys throughout the year, but I don't know how you get him in the first-choice XI if you're staying with a 4-2-3-1.

Personally I'm interested in seeing what a 3-5-2 looks like:

----Heber-Mitri----
Mata-Parks-Maxi-Ring-Tinnerholm
--Callens-Sands-Chanot---
-------Johnson-----

That, right there, is probably our best 11 players all on the field in a starting lineup. But will Deila use that formation? We need to learn more about our new coach before we know for sure.

i think if we are looking for a slightly more defensive stance, Sands would fit better than Parks. Ring would be more of the enforcer and Sands would be more defensive with slightly better distribution than Ring. Neither can carry the ball like Parks does, but Sands gives us more defensive posture than Parks and in some situations, that may be better for us. otherwise, we'd have to go 3 in the back like your 2nd scenario, which may be the best formation to get our best XI on the field and play the attacking style that Deila says he likes to play.

Right. And with all the fixture congestion from CCL and weekday games, we're going to need more than our top-11. That's where Sands, Ring, and Parks will all get plenty of action. So to try to pick a "Top 11" is pretty meaningless considering all the play Sands is going to get.

It would be an abomination if Sands isn’t the first name on your lineup card. He’s going to end up in Germany or Holland within 12 months on a record like fee for a Homegrown Defender.

You know who isn’t going to Germany or Holland? Chanot and Callens.

Do you think the 2M (+5M for incentives) for Scally isn't good enough?

That's totally fair, but Chanot and Callens are one of the best CB pairings in the league. I'm loathe to break that up. If we play 3 in the back, there's room for Sands. All indications are that Deila doesn't like 3 in the back, so odds are we need to find a space for him. Maybe Deila does do Sands-Callens or Chanot-Sands -- maybe he rotates the 3 CB's by game. Remember that we have so much fixture congestion this year, all of those top 15 or so players on our roster will all get lots of time.

Right. One of the more interesting questions this season is how we are going to handle all the fixture congestion, especially early.

If we are successful in advancing past the first round, our February-March schedule would look something like this.

Thu, Feb 20 - at San Carlos
Wed, Feb 26 - San Carlos
Sun, March 1 - at Columbus
Sat, March 7 - at Toronto
Wed, March 11 - CCL
Sat, March 14 - Dallas
Wed, March 18 - at CCL
Sat, March 21 - Vancouver

That is 8 games in 30 days, including the last 7 games in 25 days and the last 5 game in 15 days. There would be two trips to Central America/Mexico. There would be 2 triple game weeks back-to-back.

There seems to be ample opportunity to use our depth to rotate players at key positions. Look at the pairings below to see the alternatives. The only players who don't have a solid sub behind them are Ring and Maxi and, I guess, Matarrita.

Heber/Taty
Mitri/GMS
Isi/Medina
Parks/Rocha or Zelalem
Tinnerholm/Scally
Callens & Chanot - Sands & (maybe) Ibeagha

Putting it another way, the lineup on the left is a good bet for our preferred Starting XI. The lineup on the right is a strong lineup of mostly backups. If we roll out the left lineup for CCL matches, I am comfortable and confident rolling out the right lineup for 2-3 MLS matches. I think it would be very competitive and help keep the team fresh.

Mata pulled his hamstring just looking at this. We need LB depth but other than that I agree we have some nice options for squad rotation.

Sands in for Chanot. Put him next to Callens in a back 4, Chanot a more than capable backup. Chanot was our best defender 2 years ago before Callens came in. Due to Sands' potential and desire to grab a big fee for him after this year, start Sands next to Callens and use Chanot when he's tired/when we play Cincy. Chanot wasn't consistent last year and it hurt us in a few games.
