Do we need another 8?

I'm slightly out of step with consensus, but I think Parks is slightly overrated around here. And after Ring and Parks, we have Sands, who's better left at CB, Zelalem, who couldn't make SKC's first team last year, Rocha and Torres, who have limited ceilings.

Parks is fine penciled in to start, but our depth behind him is full of questions. So yes, I want another starting caliber CM.

EDIT: Oops, forgot Haak, but he obviously isn't a proven quantity either. We are leaning on a lot of question marks for a lot of minutes this year, especially if injuries strike.

I don't know that I'd say that Parks is overrated. Or if that's even all that relevant. My main concern is that we seem to be resting on our laurels. Oh we were first in the East, our squad is magnificent.

Unfortunately standing still is moving backwards in sports and life.

I like Parks, if he’s better this year than last year I may love Parks. I love this squad but there is definitely room for improvement.
Maybe that improvement comes in the form of a stud signing. Where do NYCFC’s 3 DP’s rank in this league?
Excited by the potential but if this team plays at the same level as last year I don’t think we end up first in the east.

Roughly mid table based on salary. Off the top of my head can't remember based on transfer fee or cap hit over duration of contract(s), but not as high as you might think. There's a post or a tweet somewhere where I pulled the figures but it's 3am so may have to look it up later. We vastly overperformed our spending (second only to Philadelphia) in 2019.

We also almost sacked the coach who got us there in April despite not getting the striker he desired, even though he was in the middle of reconfiguring the way we played, a process that people like Martì Perarnau have described as taking 18 months. But I digress lol.

Our front office does not give interviews but Garth Lagerway does:

“You guys know me. For better or for worse, I’m pretty meticulous and stubborn. I tend to plan things a long time in advance,” Lagerwey said. “I understand why you guys would come here and be like, ‘What have you been doing? There’s only one center back on the roster.’ But as soon as we get that direction [on the CBA] we’ll move as fast we can.
"In the meantime, there are some things we can do, I want to stress that. And we are working on one or two impact pieces hopefully sooner than later in terms of getting them in before the season.”

I think we're doing the same thing, but from a stronger position than Seattle as we've brought back our entire best 13 and only lost 2 of our best 18-20. I know that like Seattle, we have CCL games coming up early, but for me the smarter long game is to wait out the CBA resolution, and make moves after that to best position the team for the MLS season. I'm prepared to wait until a few weeks after a new CBA is agreed on to criticize the team's roster construction. And I'll accept temporarily holding still even if it costs us a CCL run, especially given that nobody in MLS has ever won that. Our roster should be able to get through the first round as it is anyway. But I'd rather limit moves now than sign 2-4 new players soon and limit flexibility after the new CBA. If we don't add 2-3 good pieces within 3-4 weeks of the new CBA then I'll agree that we're being too complacent off of last year's showing, but it's too early to judge that now.

Also, the Seattle fan comments on that Lagerway interview I just quoted are crazy. If any FO has earned some goodwill and patience from its fanbase it should be the Sounders, but the consensus is at best 50-50 mixed and a lot of fans are not buying Lagerway's cautious hedging. They want a full roster by CCL dammit, and the fact that the Sounders have a solid record of sound timely moves is counting for very little.

This is perhaps the most reassuring post I'll read all offseason. Glad it's not just us with crazy fans.

Also important to note that the next CBA will probably be for 5 years or so, so waiting a couple weeks for it to get done is also helping us in future years to not have a bad contract on the books. Perfectly acceptable to be in a holding pattern right now.

Talks of Chelsea after Mertens with the rumor of 5 million pounds as the transfer fee. If there was any truth to our interest in him, I hope we find that $6.5mil somewhere (Taty with his skyrocketing value and Medina's now-lower value). Would you take it?

but does he want to come here rather than going to the premier league?

That's the big question. Also, it's odd for Chelsea to go after an older striker, unless they're seriously looking to offload Giroud -- but doing that and bringing in another older guy? Then again, Mertens has a little more of that timeless aspect Villa had. The report linking us to Mertens was allegedly very credible, but this is now 6 months old.
