NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

It's going to be at least 5-7 years before anyone in this academy will even get a shot at joining the first team. I just want to know if CFG promote oranges or tangerines. Moreover, I hope the players that come out of this academy are great for MLS but would suck in the Premier League. We want our homegrown talent to stay at home.

Really? Seems so selfish from you, man.

A friend of mine is a coach at one of the affiliated youth clubs. He just lost his 'star' 13 year old goal keeper to the academy. Sucks for him, but promising signs for US soccer's future...

The kid will be better off for it. Sorry for your friend though. GK is a position where you only take 2-3 on these select teams. He must be incredible. Different than outfield players.

Maybe. There's plenty of stories of American kids being picked up by Euro clubs and left to wither.

I'm sure Pelosi and Cropper are better off for their experience than if they were playing for Will Ferrell and Mike Ditka's team. Or the Ladybugs.

Look at Lletget. He essentially was left to wither. Then he comes stateside and is lighting up MLS.

Look at what Seattle has been able to accomplish with its academy. It gave them a few years of Yedlin and then a big transfer fee. Now, they have first dibs on Jordan Morris. Plus, I think there is some kind of salary exemption that will allow them to pay him big bucks.

Lion is correct that it will be a few years before this pays off for us, but it is an absolute essential. It's also why it makes sense for us to be spending big now on aging stars. That's what you have to do while you wait for the youngsters to develop.

They are the possible exceptions. Let's see where Lletget is next year. And I doubt edurban's friend is anything equivalent to Farrell or Ditka.

But what's your definition of success? These guys are getting paid to play soccer over there. That experience, for Lletget, led to him being paid to play soccer here.

It's not like they shot him full of drugs and sent him into a crack den. They released him. LAG is now paying him.

Yes Lletget looks like a nice MLS player. But the jury is still out of he is a success. And sure several players who started overseas have come back and it's worked. But I've read plenty of stories of guys going over to Germany, France, England etc and have been marginalized and eventually just quit soccer all together. Makes me think "what if they had stayed in U.S. College, or a U.S. Academy; what if they had stayed and played in MLS."

It's great that players get picked up by big clubs but I wonder, like this Lemon kid from RSL, chances are he might have had a decent career in MLS, but his chances of thriving at Liverpool are low.

I like the way we are doing the academy. Mainly focusing on one age group and expanding as they get older. No point in having a large academy right away.
