I didn't have any subs this week but last year it took me a while to figure out that the order of the subs on the bench matters. The auto sub goes from left to right and the first player to give you a valid lineup will be subbed.

5-4-1 and 4-5-1 are both valid formations so the autosub will create that formation from a 4-4-2 depending on how your bench is set up.

I thought this was going to be the year I didn't have a lousy start to the season. Nope.
This is of course correct and I had a brain lock this morning. I even set up my subs last week in the preferred order, then forgot all about it this morning.

OUCH! Do you mind telling who the 6 were that didn't get off the bench? I'm guessing Poku for one?
My non-players were Seitz (which was fine because Bush came in at GK and gave me 5 points), Kah, Ellis, Sandoval, Poku and Hollingshead, which left me short one midfielder. I have a lot of wrangling to do with only two free transfers.

I would definitely trade Poku because it seems clear he won't start. The others are less certain to me, but you might learn more from team-centric sources. Kah surprises me.

Agreed about Poku, though I may keep him as a bench player through at least Toronto just to see what happens. My biggest problem is being much less familiar with the rotations of most MLS teams than I am with most Premier League teams, so I have to hit the books.

I think they put in your highest scoring sub, as long as it doesn't violate the minimum player requirements at each position. So if you only played 3 defenders, another defender has to sub in, but if you played 4, then they'll pick a higher scoring bench mid or forward. I had the same thing happen. I played a 4-3-3 and when Lloyd DNP'd it put in Tchani as a mid for 5 points. My sub defender was Polster who got a 3.
I looked at the rules, its not the highest scoring sub, but the one with the highest priority. So it is important to put your subs in a particular order. But you are correct on the position requirements.

For example, I had 2 midfielders not play at all (Nocerino and Alashe). My bench order was Johansen, Amirikwa, Polster, Vincent, Sjoberg and I played a 3-4-3.

Nocerino and Alashe got 0 minutes in the midfield. Since I used all forward and GK spots I could, Polster came off the bench for one of my mids and then Brandon Vincent came on for the other and my formation switched to a 4-3-3. Note that Vincent provided me 2 points, whereas my other defender Sjoberg would have given me 3.

Had zero idea you could re-order subs.

Does anyone play fantasy EPL or other Euro league? Trying to figure out if it's fantasy soccer in general that's completely byzantine, or just fantasy MLS.

Correct. It's exactly as Sabo wrote shortly after I erred.

I play Fantasy EPL and the Fantasy MLS rules and structure are similar, except: In FPL you can only have 3 players on your squad from the same team; subs are automatic only (bench order does matter); FMLS has more ways for a player to score points; you only get 1 free transfer per gameweek in FPL; FPL has "chips" you can play for point multipliers. So far I think those are the only differences.

So fantasy soccer in general then.

That feeling when you realize you started Kaka and he didn't play...

Wound up slightly above game-wide average with 68 points

I ended up with only 57, oof. I didn't expect to be at the top, but thought I'd at least be middle of the pack with my roster. Think it's a combination of trying MLS version of fantasy for the first time (still learning how best to accumulate mid-field points/bonuses) and some players not getting the minutes I expected (e.g. Kekuta Manneh only getting 30 min, despite pre-season headlines like "Manneh aims to lead scoring charts for Whitecaps")
