Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

Iiiinteresting..... I'm not too fussed about where he came from - he was a great player and is a well regarded coach with experience at good teams.

I'm willing to give him time to see how he gets the team playing. The most important things for me are youth development and playing good football (and winning with it). He is grounded in the first of those and the second is yet to be see, but welcome aboard Monsieur!

Looking on the bright side, I see a great parody song opportunity here - chorus is:

Oh, I ain't gonna root for Mansour's farm no more.

Tune should be obvious.

I nominate Midas to contribute the first verse.

This will probably get me flamed off the board, but I think this is exciting. One of the upsides of being affiliated with MCFC and CFG should be that we get access to talent that a stand-alone MLS team probably doesn't attract (e.g., Angelino). None of us really have any idea as to whether Viera is a good manager or not, but he has been on this track for a while, so its not like this is a celebrity hiring of a former player who is just a big name but has never shown any interest in coaching.

Is he likely viewing this as a springboard to bigger and better things? Probably. But I have no problem with that. Just like with the players, the best managers in the world are not going to view an MLS career as the be all and end all of managing. They are going to be ambitious and look at it as a stepping stone. For a team looking to take the next step in its development, I'd be happy to get two years out of a genuine talent rather than cycle through guys simply because they have "MLS experience". I really struggle with the notion that MLS is so difficult to figure out that one cannot possibly succeed unless they've kicked around the league for ten years. Sure the roster construction rules are pretty unique, but it is not rocket science.

Maybe Viera is a genuine talent, maybe he isn't. None of us can say until we see the season play out. But it is likely precisely because we have an association with CFG and because he views this as a chance to establish his bona fides that we get this chance.
