Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

Cue the old tired narrative that only Americans know how to coach in MLS
It's true until it isn't. Unless you have a GM that knows their way around the cap (an Ali Curtis) -- which we *don't* have -- a coach who has no experience in MLS is an unnecessary handicap.

Remember when Sony dropped the PS3 and it had a Blu-Ray player in it? At that point, a stand alone Blu-Ray player was around $1k. The market hadn't been decided yet but Sony was like, "F*** it! This is the future. Trust us." And so it was. That's what CFG is doing right now.

I'm optimistic about this. It's not like salary cap rules are super hard to figure it out, and players are players no matter where in the world you are.

I'm predicting a 17 win season. And I pulled that figure straight out of my ass.

We were always going to be better our second year, no matter what. So this guy is going to get praised when we get the last spot in the playoffs this coming year. Whatever..... It's cool, we'll be fine

Just said this on the Reddit - If nothing else it's an interesting move. Basically a DP coach; he's not going to be around long no matter how it goes. Either he succeeds and goes on to a bigger job in Europe (maybe with Man City) or he fails and gets fired. Only sure thing is that he won't become a fixture in New York. Hopefully a couple good years at least.

He hasn't managed a professional team yet but I'm not too worried, he has run their development squad. That's good experience, certainly better than coaching college soccer or something. There wasn't an obvious, slam dunk candidate out there so I think this is a good gamble. He already knows CFG, the Man City youth team (which has real implications for NYCFC), etc. Could work well.

I can't wait for free Nacho(s) night next summer at the stadium.

Actually he should be held to a higher standard since he's going to have a full compliment of DP's from the get go and he'll get all four projects to groom for the mother ship.
Don't forget, he still has to unravel the mess of a roster the Kreis assembled while having less Allocation $$. Right or wrong (and the masses will flame if it happens), but I expect him to have a mulligan (not of the Midas variety) the first year since there's no easy way to jettison the RSL players and get the CAP back to a place that can be worked with using big moves and not simply bandages.

Vieira: "Ok, I took a look at the roster and I need to buy a CB and a CDM. What's my transfer budget?"
Reyna: "Uhhh, we don't have a transfer budget."
Vieira: "No transfer budget? So how do we get players?"
Reyna: "We have the draft, the allocation, trades, discovery claims, and need to fit all players except for 3 under the salary cap."
Vieira: "Ok, got it. So I need to buy a CB and a CDM. What's my transfer budget?"
Reyna: "That's what I am telling you. We don't have a transfer budget, but we do have the #4 pick in the SuperDraft and I am looking to trade 3 players or sign free transfers out of Latin America for under $250K wages."
Vieira: "Ok, got it. Wages under $250K. So what's my transfer budget?"

This just makes me even further believe that Kreis was mainly canned so CFG could bring in their shill instead. What an absolute crap we've become. This will be nothing but practice for him so he can eventually take over at Man City. It's impossible to build anything long term with this foolish thinking of bringing in all of these people who are only here to get their feet wet before going back to the mother ship in a season or two.

You fire likely the future USMNT manager for a guy who isn't even a real coach. Absolute brilliance.

Until Netflix became the The Future.

I think it's more likely than not we have 3-4 loanees this year under Viera. It's the most efficient way to bring in new talent, and obviously Viera knows exactly who to bring over once he identifies the holes in our roster.

I just hope he grabs them sooner than later. Get them integrated, so we get a full season out of them.
