Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

This just makes me even further believe that Kreis was mainly canned so CFG could bring in their shill instead. What an absolute crap we've become. This will be nothing but practice for him so he can eventually take over at Man City. It's impossible to build anything long term with this foolish thinking of bringing in all of these people who are only here to get their feet wet before going back to the mother ship in a season or two.

You fire likely the future USMNT manager for a guy who isn't even a real coach. Absolute brilliance.
You mention CFG & the mothership yet fail to understand before CFG the 'mothership' was worse off than NYCFC. CFG wants NYCFC to be a winner just like the 'mother ship'

Probably been said already but in Vieira you also have a guy who Villa, Lampard and Pirlo will respect and view as a peer. He's played in Italy and England, won both leagues, played in the Champions League. Won the World Cup and the European Championship.

If you're going to invest money and playing time into three former-Euro greats, it helps to have a leader they respect. While it's not clear they definitely dismissed Kreis or didn't respect him, it's certainly possible. I just think Vieira will be able to relate to them a lot better. Again, maybe that's not what matters in MLS but I think if we know anything after one season it's that NYCFC, for better or worse, will not be your run of the mill MLS team.

Vieira: "Ok, I took a look at the roster and I need to buy a CB and a CDM. What's my transfer budget?"
Reyna: "Uhhh, we don't have a transfer budget."
Vieira: "No transfer budget? So how do we get players?"
Reyna: "We have the draft, the allocation, trades, discovery claims, and need to fit all players except for 3 under the salary cap."
Vieira: "Ok, got it. So I need to buy a CB and a CDM. What's my transfer budget?"
Reyna: "That's what I am telling you. We don't have a transfer budget, but we do have the #4 pick in the SuperDraft and I am looking to trade 3 players or sign free transfers out of Latin America for under $250K wages."
Vieira: "Ok, got it. Wages under $250K. So what's my transfer budget?"

This is precisely the scenario that we need to fear.

No one doubts Vieira's ability to teach elements of football tactics to players. It's the understanding of MLS player-acquisition rules that is likely to bedevil him -- or any other foreign coach, be it Ancelotti, Mourinho, Guardiola, or whomever you'd like to name.

Unless the team is going to appoint an experienced MLS executive to a GM-type role overseeing player acquisition, the hiring of Vieira as manager is extremely risky.

I was in favour of Kreis's sacking; but this hiring puts that move in a new light.

I am in favor of this move. The downside is a lack of first team managerial experience and no MLS knowledge. I think both can be overcome.

The upside is that he will immediately have the respect of the DPs who are contemporaries of his.

:D:D:D I reckon there is a bloodline.........

This move can go either way. We really won't know until we see him in action. At least we have something to post about until January ....

If they want us to be a winner they are doing a really, really bad job so far. If you really want to win you hire a coach with a proven track record. Not someone who has only been coaching children. You also sign DP's like Giovinco or Dos Santos. Not some washed up player who played 9 games to help us sell t-shirts.

The reason why MCFC is better because of CFG is money. Plain and simple. They've spent over a billion so far on their squad. It's not some genius plan. They just dumped stupid amounts of money on players. In MLS it doesn't matter how much money they have. They can't just buy success because of MLS restrictions.

Willing to give him a chance. His experience with developing young talent is a plus. I get why folks don't like the MCFC connection, we'll just have to see how this plays out. If it means we win more matches, and play a better game, then I'm all for it.

Some teams will spend a significantly higher amount than others though in MLS, so to an extent, your argument is somewhat incorrect. Not to mention there is no limit on the DP rule, enabling us to gain better DP's than other teams, since we are willing to spend.

Perfunctory post noting that this demonstrates CFG's commitment to this team and desire to win AND that this also means that there is nothing local, New York, or even American about this team except its playing field and logo. Which isn't unusual and they'll be judged on whether they succeed. Nothing I haven't said before in other contexts or read from others in this very thread. My default position is cautous optimism.

...are you... serious?
100%. Kreis was one of the favorites to replace Bob Bradley before Jurgen was hired. He's been penned as a future USMNT coach for awhile now.

No. Teams can only spend up to the cap. Sure there are some teams that are spending below that. But all the top teams are pretty much there. So at best, all we can do is match them in spending. Not bank roll the league like MCFC does.

And it really doesn't matter how much you can spend on DP's when you're signing guys like Lampard. It's not like we are going to drop 100 million a season on Messi.

I'm optimistic about this. It's not like salary cap rules are super hard to figure it out, and players are players no matter where in the world you are.

I'm predicting a 17 win season. And I pulled that figure straight out of my ass.
Salary caps aren't hard to figure out? NBA and NFL teams have designated capologists on the payroll, and they've had a cap forever.

And it's not just the cap - it's the player pool. Picking the right players from the youth academy is entirely different than accurately assessing the college player pool, understanding NASL allocation order, making smart trades to gain more allocation cash, cleverly using your core player and DP slots, and finding a starting defender for less than $300k.

It's *massively* challenging. It's not that someone from overseas can't figure it out -- of course they can. But can Viera and CFG figure it out before people here, there and everywhere turn on them just like they did Kreis? That's not likely.

Don't forget, he still has to unravel the mess of a roster the Kreis assembled while having less Allocation $$. Right or wrong (and the masses will flame if it happens), but I expect him to have a mulligan (not of the Midas variety) the first year since there's no easy way to jettison the RSL players and get the CAP back to a place that can be worked with using big moves and not simply bandages.
Not a chance. If you're really going to give him a pass due to the roster after everyone here hammered Kreis despite *serious* roster restrictions that weren't of his own making, you're dealing in the absurd.
