Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

0-4 in elimination contests and 3 blowout losses to our biggest rival is not working.
I agree with you, but I think it's a little bit of both.

Going back to my earlier post on this, PV needs to figure out a legitimate Plan B and install it.

For the bulk of the season, I don't think we need to drastically change things up. What we do and how we do it works across the season. But what you point out here is a big, if not the biggest hurdle, and we don't seem to have an answer for it. So we need to have something else in our back pocket for that.

Yeah, my comment in response to ZYanksRule ZYanksRule rule is a bit flip, and his point is right for the most part. The approach is working overall. But it needs variants.

I am not really understanding this "Plan B" everyone wants.

Did we not change tactically and go to 3 in the back against the Red Bulls?

Have we not played more directly in several games this season - most notably against Dallas?

What exactly do people want to see?

we changed down 3-0 though, we did not really play direct.

i think the thing is that when we play against them we know they are going to press, and well. our passing is not the quickest and get exposed badly. to add to it its not the first time at all this happens.

when everyone had really bad passing too it just makes it look alot worse.

That's a good point - we have employed it at times. Dallas jumps out. Last season at RBA too. Which makes it all the more frustrating that Paddy seems to abandon it when it seems most appropriate.

Well, to be fair to Patrick, we were down 2-0 before he even had a chance to change tactics.

I too would have liked to have seen us be more direct in the NJ game. However, I am also not willing to completely abandon the enterprise after one result. We had the same tactics last year and went 2-0-1 against them. I do think NJ is a lot better this season (they got better as last season went along), but it would be foolish to act like we can't play out of the back against them. Vieira is 3-3-1 against Marsch.

I think that's true, but I also think there's a danger in overreacting to one game. Did the players not show up, was it the wrong personnel, or was the system the problem? I don't know, but I'm going to give PV the benefit of the doubt considering his success the last two years.

no its not time to change the strategy....but i still think its too slow going up against a team that can press.

EDIT: again, the fact that they were beaten on many balls and even out muscled just makes it look worse

Very much disagree on this. Thought we were much more willing to pop it over the press.
That's definitely true. I was speaking in the more generic sense of primarily playing out of the back. I don't know that our style of play was that much different last year against the Red Bulls as opposed to other teams - we evolved into a team that is sometimes willing to drive it long when necessary.

I wonder if our intent was to be more stubborn about that this year or if the execution was just lacking.

We have the most points in MLS over the last 1.25 seasons. Why should we change?

How exactly do points work again in the playoffs and US Open Cup? Asking for a technical Director and Manager.

That's your definition of success. That's fine. Are you saying SKC has been better than NYCFC the last two years?

SKC knows how to win the big games and earn silverware. Maybe they have had a dip compared to NYCFC over the last 1.25 years (very arbitrary period), but they are the gold standard in MLS for how to run a successful club that is competitive in every competition and can close many of them out. They’ve got 7 championships (2MLS Cups, 1SS, 4USO Cups) and won the West conference 5x, all while not being the biggest spenders & using their academy to develop 1st team players. Their performance dips typically mirror when they retool their team with new youth/sell players for a profit.

As a flip-comparison, Tottenham plays fantastic football and has absolutely nothing to show for it because they can’t win the big matches; last year they finished second in the league playing beautiful football, but they didn’t win squat. During the same season, ManU, playing a less savory style, won the Europa Cup and League Cup while finishing a few places behind the Spurs. Everybody unanimously views ManU as having the better season.

People like winners. That’s why Arsenal gets so much shit for playing stylishly with nothing to show for it.

Winning Silverware in MLS is almost an accident outside of the Supporters Shield. We've been through this exercise before. Outside of Toronto last year, when was the last time the best team in MLS won the playoffs?

If it's a coin flip, why are we 0-5 in knockout matches?

Maybe because the teams winning it haven’t spent the whole season vested in one style, thus they’ve shed points and position while perfecting multiple tactics, and are ready for a knockout-style run where they can pick a tested method for each opponent?
