Philadelphia (Home) - Postmatch

Listen he was great tonight so I don't want to drag the guy, but Castellanos really does dive all over the field. Both of those penalties were really soft. The second one far softer than the first. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the ref bought it, but he really does go down quickly. Dark arts. As long as it benefits us.

Maxi, man. The guy is just so ridiculously good. YES said he came into today with 3 goals and 8 assists over his previous 8 games -- make it 5 goals, 10 assists in his last 9. Insane numbers he's putting up right now. Everything we do revolves around him. He had an MVP-quality year last year, and he's been even better this year. He has to be re-signed.

Really? I still think the second penalty was legit, from my angle behind the goal it looked like an elbow to face and connecting. If it was soft actually touching his face I can’t tell.

Like I told my buddy last year when I gave him shit: taty is a dick on the field, if he was good I’d let I’d slide. This year he has gotten better so I’ll let it slide.

Philly fans whining on twitter about our unfair advantage at the stadium. So sick of that excuse.

It’s only philly fans who bitch about this, most likely because they have yet to win in Yankee stadium

The second one was kind of shoulder to chest, maybe a little bit of chin but Castellanos sold it. At the very least I thought Bedoya had position and had the right to that spot.

the thing I really want to talk about was how Chanot was doing after being rammed by Ilsinho. I thought it was certainly a red card. Chanot was decked right at the head. There was a long free kick later where Chanot signal he didn't want to come up the field. I hope he's doing alright, get's an MRI tonight, and then eventually donates his brain to the study of CTE and soccer.

Remember, he ceremoniously dies at least once a match. Usually after the 70 min mark.

Both penalty calls were awfully close. Bedoya got the second call because he played the man, not the ball. Shoulder-to-shoulder is not an excuse to put a guy on the ground. It's the recognition that two guys running evenly for a ball are going to naturally knock into each other. Bedoya put a hard shoulder on Castellanos and sent him flying, then he stepped to the ball and dribbled it away. The ref didn't hesitate. I don't even think this was an instance of Taty "selling it". There wasn't time.

Agreed. It may have been difficult to catch in real time, but part of the blow actually glanced to the face as well. If Taty was a faceless man, it would have been even more clear of a penalty. Given that it was a guy who flops and sells (and already won an earlier PK) it’s natural to question it. As for the first call, that was very close but it’s nice to win a coin flip call as we have had a bunch go against us.

Whining about the pitch after losing is usually the first reaction from opposing fans. “Well, we lost but that pitch is such crap and we’d kill them on a REAL field...” so tiring.

And besides, NYCFC has one of the best away records on those “real” fields.

Dome had the game pegged perfectly at half time when he basically said that Philly had two chances and scored, whereas we had many opportunities but were a complete mess within the 18. He said we therefore needed an adjustment to expand creativity and alternatives in the final third. We came out for the second half with a very different looking 3-1 going forward and played some of the best combination football we have ever played. Credit where credit is due to Dome for smart mid game tactics.

Bedoya had the right to the spot right up until he raised his shoulder into the chest. He thought he was getting a freebie at an unsuspecting Taty. Should have just played the ball and ignored Taty.

The fact that our DP was nailed to the bench in a game that could have used a speedy wing to run late at a tired defense reiterates that we needed reinforcements even on the wing. I understand that it’s a peculiar time with the international absences, but replace that with a knock or two and we are in a similar spot.

This is where I fall after watching it about a dozen times. Bedoya made a good play and established position. Had he just stood his ground instead of jamming his shoulder into Taty we get nothing. Even having done it some refs would have waved play on and I couldn't complain. The ref last night was giving Taty star/veteran treatment. I really would like to see Castellanos dive and flourish a lot less, but it worked last night.

I thought both penalties were in the sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't category.

I thought Ilsinho was borderline yellow/red, but he went off for injury anyway and everything else went our way so I can't sweat it. Did anyone see how he was injured on that play? I watched that collision several times last night and couldn't see how he hit his head or what happened to him. Both our announcers (in Hawaiian shirts btw) thought he was faking it to distract from his deliberate foul up until the moment he left the game.

Taty was Villa-esque last night. Both finishes were high quality. His defensive work rate was excellent and the pressure led to a bunch of turnovers. The final goal with Maxi was brilliant.

Philadelphia was the number one team in the conference by every metric going into the game. We were missing 5 starters they were missing 1-2. We dominated the game and emptied our bench (Bedoya JPT). It was a massive performance.

Parks was quietly great as well. He made some terrific passes in tight spaces that lead to both goals and chances. And I was even more impressed/surprised by some of his important defensive plays.

On replay it appeared that Chanot’s foot hit Ilsinho’s face - the collision flipped Chanot, causing his legs to whip through the air. Karma.

I watched the game in bits on my phone live, but watched a bit of a condensed version more closely thos morning. Last night I though Parks was almost as invisible as Mitrita was, but after watching closely, he seemed to be quietly involved in everything and one of the keys to our second half dominance.

Exclude the 2 PKs and NYC had 1.69 xG, but I want to focus on the defense. We were missing our starting

Goalkeeper
Left Back
Left Center Back
D-Mid/Center CB

We gave up only 2 goals and 1 xG. The Union started their right side attacking super sub almost certainly because of this, and got nearly nothing from it. The first goal came from attacking on their left. Two of their shots including the best chance on their right side came off set pieces.
