Philadelphia - Postmatch

I don't think it's unreasonable to have a higher bar for any player occupying one of the 3 DP slots. I'd argue that people have gone pretty easy on Medina's low (for a DP) output. There is certainly a more accommodating standard being applied this year to Medina (2018 6g, 7a, 2005 min played) than last season when people where calling Maxi (2017 5g, 9a, 2523 min played) a complete failure. If Maxi was a terrible disappointment last season as many claimed what's Medina this year?

On the flip side if Medina becomes as pivotal to the team next season in year 2 as Maxi did this year we will be in a really nice spot with him.
I think you missed the joke in Christopher Jee Christopher Jee 's post

Edit: Though I do agree with your post, just wanted to point out that I don't think his post meant what you thought it meant.

Lol yeah it was a pretty throwaway pun, although a lot of truth is said in jest. I feel bad at the level of argumentation that it brought gbservis gbservis to.

Like said above, I'm sorry my poor pun elicited such a detailed response from you.

Although in 2017 I thought fan opinion on Maxi was far, far below my own, I think Medina has statistically overperformed in displays that have underwhelmed and shown us how much he still has to grow.

Also think that while it's true that he occupies a DP slot, his cap hit as a Young DP is significantly lower than full DP cap hit (150k or 200k vs 504k), so it should be taken into consideration in any bang for buck analysis.

His cost needs to be dually judged on the actual cost (low) and the much, much higher opportunity cost of not having a better player in that DP spot. 3 DPs plus a young DP slot would be a great idea.

The pigeon drawing at 1:06 is pretty cool. Nice full length BTS too.

what's with the jackets?

also, holy shit, glad I missed all that beer that was thrown around after the first goal! Think I was just far enough behind it.

No need to feel bad, my fault for being dense and totally misinterpreting your post. I've been thinking a lot about how harsh people were on Maxi and how comparatively patient they have been with Medina for a while, I would have written it at some point either way.

Watching the highlights and still struggling to see how the ref gave a penalty and at least not even put it to VAR

They were going away from the goal and ring had already got in front of him and was clearing the ball before SJ made contact

Doesn’t have to be in possession of the ball. A foul, that would typically result in a direct kick, in the box is a PK.

Not sure what there was to review. SeanJohn clearly took him out without playing the ball whatsoever

That was a stone cold penalty. Nothing to review.

Part of it may be that Maxi came in a full-fledged DP rather than a YDP, which is by definition a prospect, a project of sorts. Fans may have felt we could have had Khedira or Chicharito on a 6.5 million salary instead of a sub in Liga MX on a 2 mill salary. OTOH, Maxi never gave off that whiff of softness or indifference that Medina projects, he's always been a guys who runs his butt off until the 90 min. I personally defended him from day 1 because I was impressed with how authoritatively he came in and positioned himself as the conductor of the orchestra, for good or ill.

I think this is right, and also Maxi came in during a year when one existing DP mostly sat on the bench, and the team's history was
Villa - Great
Lampard - Solid but terrible delay and injury issues
Pirlo - Also solid, but fair or not, below expectations and definitely stayed one year too long

So having the new guy underwhelm set a lot of us off. Conversely, having 2 DPs perform well this year for nearly full time kind of let Medina off the hook.

This is not reassuring for Wednesday night...
Maybe the ASA version will make you feel better:
NYC: 1.88
PHI: 1.46

I'm pretty sure both ASA and Opta ignore Own goals and credit PKs. I know other than that they can differ, but this is a massive swing from the Opta:
NYC: 1.20
PHI 2.05

ASA has an xGD of +0.42 for NYC while Opta is -0.85. That's basically describing 2 different games.

Did anyone else notice that Trusty almost had a second own goal in the sequence that led to Villa's goal?

It started with a long ball to Medina that he tried to slot past the keeper with a slow roll to the far post. Trusty barely gets onto it about 4 yards from the line, but his clearance goes right into the middle of the goal mouth. Fortunately for him, it bounces off the back of a player standing on the goal line who is able to clear.
