Portland - Postmatch

lmao you were counting the seconds on their GK every goal kick, and you were VAR'ing pretty much the entire game, we saw you from up top. I agree with most of your observations, too.

However, I would like to say I am fine with this loss. If there's a team I'm happy we lost to, it's this one. Portland is a great team with solid players. We were missing our entire front line, and played half of what would be a B team. We held our own. We had some defensive mistakes in the back, but largely were dealt with. Our offensive efforts were entirely shit from start to finish, but honestly I can't blame them. When we're missing our entire front line, that's bound to happen. Last game Tinny had a wonderful game running up and down, but this time he wasn't able to properly link up as he has done previously because of it. Plus, coming off of 2 games on extremely short rest, I can't really fault the players, as up until about the 85th minute they were giving it their all.

...The one thing I am SUPER pissed off about is that Dome didn't use two substitutes. Parks wasn't playing well. At the 80th minute I would have stuck Haak on for Parks because, why not? Nothing to lose. As well, I would have taken sweat off and put Torres on and gone three in the back.
...I don't care what Dome would have done as long as he used all three subs. But he didn't. On short rest. with another game in three days.
Around 80, Parks had his foot stepped on and was limping afterwards. Still no sub.

We were without a sub who would provide us with a better chance of chasing a goal. Regardless of the game on Wednesday you still need to play for a point. Unfortunately Haak and Torres weren’t good options there even with a tired Parks and a Ben Sweat Ben Sweat. That was an unfortunate circumstances issue not a Dome issue (in my opinion.)
In my opinion, our midfield didn't look solid. why not let them try? Worst case we still lose, but why not just try?

Stuver was begging to be allowed up for the final corner, but was not. I never understand that.

Also, studs to the face should be an immediate sending off. No question.
I found it odd that in the first half Portland had 12 fouls with 5 being yellow and then in the second half 1 foul. Made no sense - thought for sure there’d be a second yellow->red infraction but somehow they played perfectly clean.....

We were missing 6 starters, including our entire starting front line, and still outplayed them. No ideas in the final third, but that's to be expected when the front line is Castellanos and Matarrita. Seriously -- we had no one available for this game. It happens. The guys played hard, they worked their asses off, and really should have had the equalizer numerous times. Not even mad about this one. Between fixture congestion and the injury list, this is what it is.

I thought our normal starters (aside from Matarrita) were all good -- Ring and Maxi were both all over the field, Tinnerholm was being asked to do more than he's used to, Chanot was incredible, and Ofori was fine. Ben Sweat was a disaster. Just a disaster.

Really looking forward to getting Johnson back in net. Stuver is really shaky back there. His distribution is fine, but he's a goal waiting to happen.

As for the whining about the official, it was Ted Unkel. Enough said. He's a clown, but he was a clown for both teams.

The other thing I wanted to mention - it was a beautiful, 80 degree evening with no humidity. Perfect night for soccer. And I understand it was the third home game of a week, a holiday weekend, etc. But for this team to only get 18,300 fans for a Sunday evening game against Portland is a major red flag. I don't know what the answer is, but I would like to think the organization needs to take a long, hard look at why attendance is freefalling this season. 18,300 is not good enough for a Sunday night in July. Whatever the front office is doing -- it's not working.

I'm pretty sure tonight's attendance was lower than usualy because of all the games that happened today and people didn't want to come out during all that hecticness. I could be wrong though

I don't disagree that falling attendance is an issue, but in addition to what schwafta said, it's also a Sunday night end of a long holiday weekend of sorts. A number of people I know were away this weekend.

Did people know before the summer started that today was such a ridiculous soccer day? I had no idea until a few weeks ago that all these games were going on during the same day. Obviously the schedule had been announced, I just didn't put two-and-two together. I understand a lot of people were away, but why isn't the club getting a larger walk-up attendance? It seems like the only people there are season-ticket holders. It's concerning.

Bad bounces tonight with a very tired and beaten up team. I won’t lose sleep over it. These guys are absolutely exhausted and dragging. They were like zombies after the game.

Ibeagha makes a minor mistake and the ball bounces bad. Stuver should have come out to clear the ball anyway. Two minor mistakes and a cheeky chip and we go down 1-0.

Thought Ibragha was shaky all match. Might be his worst performance to date with us. Chanot was solid. Turned it up a gear tonight. I don’t think he plays Wednesday is my guess.

Sweat was terrible. Really really bad. I liked Dome’s tactical shift to move him into the back line after halftime, but he was terrible tonight. Thought Tinny was fine. I think the mistakes were fatigue frankly.

Ring was really good. I thought Ofori was probably our most consistent player tonight but he seemed out of rhythm with his teammates. To be expected with guys playing out of position. I thought Parks was terrible. A level above Sweat. Looked exhausted after the game.

Maxi didn’t have it tonight. He needs a rest. Don’t even bring him on the plane. Matarrita is not an inverted winger. I thought he looked
Better at LWB.

Taty Castellanos is fantastic. We’re lucky to have him. Works his balls off all game long. I thought his runs tonight were even better than usual. I love the guy.

Medina was useless again.

I’ll agree with the shouts on Haak and even JPT. Maxi and Keaton were gassed. Run them out.

A minute of Lion conspiracy thoughts:

My TV recording of the game on FS1 ended at 85'. So the 2 hour block didn't finish the entire game.

Was 5' stoppage time in the 2nd half and not longer due to the having FS1 Gold Cup TV coverage?

Not sure what is up with the high line we are playing on set pieces, but that more than anything else is what led to the goal. The Outfield ran a nice article on our set piece formation a couple of weeks back, but it's just getting more absurd. It seems to creep farther up field every week. By August, we will be lining up the defense in the opposition's half.

Just in case anyone here hasn't read the article yet, it really does nail our problem on free kicks like the one Portland scored from.

More upset about the USMNT game. It felt like every single second or third pass was off by 2-3 feet and intercepted and every cross into the box was blocked. Portland played a ton of players back, and I think that was to make up for Chara starting on the bench, but getting that first goal only allowed them to double down defensively. Everyone just looked off, and you really can't blame them. Starting to expect a skeleton squad for Wednesday because we can't risk another embarrassment in NJ.

I will give Portland credit for their defending. We broke it down but their shape and ability to park the bus up 1-0 was pretty fantastic
