Premier League 18/19

I have a feeling this season it's gonna be Tottenham.
I, too, think Spurs will have a more difficult season. At a minimum, the sheer number of absences during pre-season will mean their early season squads suffer. And then there's the fatigue factor given the minutes those players have in their legs over the last year.

But you're on your own predicting that City will be 5th. I don't see how that's possible at all.

Separating this from above post because it's so unrelated:

I'd be curious to hear from a long-time City fan the rationale behind why the Blue Moon crowd seems to pervasively and obsessively hate Liverpool. It's not like it's a long-standing rivalry, and most Liverpool fans I know or encounter at a minimum have a fondness and respect for how your team plays.

I mean, I get the bogey team thing, although that hasn't really kept City from winning any silverware, save the potential opportunity in UCL this year. But this hate goes back as long as I've had reason to encounter City fans (so as long as this forum and the bm crowd influx re: cookieburger). Is it more of a neighboring city rivalry thing between Manchester and Liverpool people? It seems so vitriolic from a lot of people on the MC side. Maybe it goes the other way, too, and I just haven't seen it or am semi-oblivious because I just chalk it up to people being idiots online. I'm genuinely curious

Using your same logic, MCFC, LFC, MUFC will also all suffer as they are all who’s who of national team starters. LFC will have an easier start to it since Egypt and Brazil got knocked out early, but still, a lot of key guys logged minutes.

As a Leeds fan I have always had a thing for the teams that also hate Man U. That includes Liverpool and City. I will never forget Viduka scoring all 4 against Fowler-era Liverpool in a come from behind 4-3 victory. Both teams loved to punch and were defensively ambivalent and valued living over not dying. Liverpool obviously doing a better job of the latter.

Chelsea will be a different team. I like Sarri & they just brought in Zola to assist. Depending on where all these transfer rumors end, could be 4th or 5th. If they get Higuain and Rugani...now floating Pjanic too, they could recover fast. Maybe still a season away from challenging top spot though.

They’ll be fine right up until the point the Home Office dings RomanA for failing to disclose where his money came from. I don’t think that saga is close to being over.

Who? Firmino played barely even a full game combined.

Henderson played a lot and will be late, but we just signed 3 midfielders, two of whom joined July 1 and have been there all preseason and can easily replace him (as can Gini).

Sadio, Mo and Grujic all came back a couple of days ago.

The biggest miss for us will be Lovren in week 1. But I don’t worry too much about CB fatigue, Just fitness.

Spurs will miss like 11 guys on MD1.

Thanks, Netherlands for shitting the bed and giving us a fully fit VVD and Gini. Big help.

Anyone else want to make some early predictions on top 4?
City
Liverpool
Man U
Arsenal

The last one is a bit bold, but from what I can read of the Gunners' preseason it seems like Emery is doing a good job getting Arse's shit together (sorry, sorry). I also think a full season of Aubameyang is going to do wonders for their goal production.

Liverpool are proper title contenders this season though at certain positions their depth is still a touch thin to compete in both the Prem and the CL at the highest possible level.
Also, I actually think Everton could compete for a Europa spot if they stay out of Silva’s way and the fans don’t go toxic overreacting to every little thing early in the season.
I honestly have no idea what to expect from this season beyond another mid-table finish. Everton are saddled with the horrible squad "construction" problems from the last two years and that will have lasting impact. Bringing in Richarlison is... fine? Too expensive, but a good chunk of that is "we poached Silva" tax and we definitely need a productive attacking midfielder. He was tenth in the league for open-play xG last season, and that's including the fact that he basically downed tools after Silva left Watford.
Rumors of adding Lucas Digne to the back line as a possible transition away from aging Baines, so that's positive, and on the other side of the field is a healthy Seamus Coleman. We still don't have a replacement for Lukaku's goal production, and it's unlikely that we will for quite some time. I'll predict a 7th place finish.

City
Liverpool
United
Spurs

Think Liverpool will run it closer but City still have the deeper squad. I still totally fear Liverpool head to head after last season but I think City are still better equipped for campaigns on multiple fronts.

Really don't know what to expect from Arsenal or Chelsea they both could push for those CL spaces or be total shit shows with the new managers etc.

Keith would you rather have Digne or Tierney ? Seen your Toffees linked with both presuming it's one or the other.

The Grand Old Team forum seems to much prefer Tierney, but I think I lean slightly Digneward. Probably just snobbery on my part. Digne is older so there's less upside, but he's also considerably more experienced than Tierney. That said, it's unclear to me why Everton would be an attractive destination for Digne while I'm sure Tierney would be a lot more excited by the idea.

I selfishly want you guys to give Antonee a nice chance, but I can appreciate the risk of doing so.

It’s a shame that given you all had practically half a season of being obviously, solid mid table, and fat Sam didn’t do nearly as much as he could have to allow the young talent to kick on.

Everton has a fair number of good young players that seem to have stagnated. Think that’s a lot on Sam.

Just pointing this out because it’s totally wild how much ass Edwards is kicking in the transfer market these days.

Buys Alisson for gk world record. Sells 4th string keeper to Leicester for £12.5M. After they sell Mignolet, they’ll have basically brought the cost of Alisson down to roughly £30-35 I’d guess.

Or you could look at it that we traded our 3rd string keeper for a top 10-15 winger in the league.

Either way, Michael Edwards is the truth.

I think there might be a certain bias toward British players? SPL sucks but it is arguably closer in style to EPL than continental leagues so less of a style transition? Not sure. Tierney is younger and he's technically had more success than Digne in recent years but not being able to entirely cut it at Barca and PSG isn't the same (no offense) as being able to cut it or not at Everton.

This is great! But it’d be better if the colors could be grouped so it’s easier to compare quantities of red/orange/green. Because as is, it appears LFC is better off than MUFC, but in actuality LFC has 6R/5O while MUFC has 9R/4O, so not that much of a difference (-2); granted, I haven’t totaled the missed days so it could be way more skewed, or not.

I would argue that green should also be applied to the players who started vacation after the postseason international friendlies, but pre-World Cup.

It’s a little silly not to, as for them, it is basically a standard pre-season. They just got to a few extra days on the back end, but will be fully caught up by the time PL play kicks off.

ETA: My read on this is it backs up that Spurs (and City) are kind of screwed. United is kind of screwed, but far less since Mourinho doesn’t get much out of Pogba anyway.

Liverpool is kind of lucky because two players who would have been impacted didn’t go due to injury, one of whom is out for the year now and the other no one believes can stay healthy &/or contribute regularly.

Arsenal and Chelsea might have fewer misses, but they also have new managers to mesh with so a greater impact on those few late arrivals.

Who knows how much it all matters. Guess we’ll see. I don’t think, for instance, we’ll see Jack Harrison lining up for City just to get Sterling an extra week of rest.

Not proper PL news, but might as well put it here. Bayern president responding to Uzil statement retiring from international play.

Uli is just nuts, but not entirely wrong in ripping Özil for his defensive performances.
However, if Uli was smart or read the letter, he'd have seen Özil's reasons for not wanting to wear the German shirt for the time being is due to the racist, political, and demeaning nature of the DFB President. It's all just a crapshoot, and I honestly have no idea why Uli is even going after Özil like this.
