Preseason - January 18 - Palmeiras

You could say the young players were gutsy and fearless. They’ve been playing for the badge for 4+ years. They owe something to it cause they know what the badge has done for them with development. In a way it seems to be what separates us come playoffs.
We don’t have any grit to our play. It’s all too careful and perfect. Hopefully we can see more out of them this preseason.

Barraza is garbage. That is all.

can't say he has impressed. but it's been difficult to really judge him based on the shots he's faced. he's pretty much been left hanging 1v1. can't really blame him for some of the goals he let by. i will say that he was supposedly signed for his distribution and it hasn't exactly been ederson-like as he was hyped to be. i'd like to see faster and better decision making and more precise passes out of the back.

You make a good point. Rarely do I feel like I see an all-out / win at any cost / gonna die after the whistle type effort from the entire squad (some players but not all). There was that match in the blistering heat when we were down a man off the bat and persevered. And that match 2(?) year ago against philly(?) where we scored a bunch of goals one after another feeding off the energy and tore them apart. And that’s not to say there wasn’t a period under PV where I always though we had another goal in us (which was wonderful to watch), but that was due more to the superior system than the all-out gonna out-play you kind of effort. For the most part, this club has never had he mentality or looked like they can play with the ruthlessness that the Jesse Marsch RB teams were known for.

Barraza got a lot of minutes last spring, and looked good. He might just be rusty.
First goal was a bit soft but I also understand why he didn’t react instantly. If the Palmeiras player gets a touch on it then it goes in near post so he has to maintain positioning. Second goal just wasn’t his fault. That was a bad mistake and he took away the low shot. Attacker made the right split second decision when the ball bounced up for him and went over his arms.

Was he coming off the draft and college? Not having a true reserve team/USL side is hampering development and sharpness with guys losing that rookie spark that’s seen in their first camp. College may not fully develop with a lack of matches and short NCAA season, but it’s gotta be better than virtually no game minutes and only getting action in practice. Definitely something to watch with the HG kids that don’t see playing time the first year - are they as good the second year as they were with the academy (all things being equal with the normal physical development of aging).

that stat is severely skewed based on the fact that ring plays a lot of balls back and forth with the CBs and maxi/parks in midfield with no actual progress. of the meaningful passes to get us out of pressure or move us forward, my eye says he tends to be a bit sloppy.
Have always thought this but felt it was verboten to speak it... Ring’s passing often does not inspire me. We love Ring, but I agree he is sloppy with his passes.
I don’t want to him to loose his intensity but his fouls are very often pointless.

Worried about having to rely on Seb. in big games.

The kid needs minutes, i do think he will be loaned out. Once he gets playing time we can judge if his reaction time and reflexes is just rust or just lack of skill. I do think its because of lack or reps he needs the minutes.

Overall:
Jasson and rosario need to be signed somewhere and loaned they need the minutes to further imorove.

The kids have fight in themand i liked that attitude both games

Im only concerned of maxi sub. Though still a month or so to get fit for CCL

Preseason is preseason but we can learn from this.

Big picture -- its so impressive at the beginning of the second half that our B/C players academy and trialists can put in such a good show against a Palmieras A team that was trying to win a tournament. We should all recognize what a fantastic job the academy is doing to consistently have so many players who are able to step up and play NYCFC style soccer at a much higher level than they have ever faced in their lives. Dwayne DeRosario knew what he was doing when he had his son switch to NYCFC. DeRo had a helluva goal against a very experienced Defender.

Jasson -- the 1 v 2 moment of brilliance cross was impressive. I was more impressed by his performance the second half when half of Palmieras was trying to crush him. He stayed stuck in and kept his composure with the ball -- I wouldn't be surprised if Ronny told him to back off a bit so he didnt get hurt.

Haak had his mistakes that weren't fatal but I thought he did a great job as the 6 moving the ball around until we could get an advantage. He may be getting substantial minutes this year with the schedule congestion and if someone gets hurt -- and I won't mind.

Starting off the preseason with such difficult opponents will work well for us. San Carlos is going to be levels below in quality from these Brazilian teams' pre-season form.

I am hoping the performance from the academy players lights a fire under our A team. Complacency is a little bit of what I fear going into this season.
I liked the pluck and determination of what Haak showed today but he needs some seasoning.
Mitri just missed what would have been a gorgeous goal in a direct kick. If that guy can put it all together...
It is pre season, but it is hard to forget 2019.
Concerns about defensive lapses and stretch’s where there is zero creativity on offense.
The Medina situation is an albatross...

The two groups of players are in nowhere near a similar situation. The academy kids are trying to prove themselves, our top 15 players on the roster are just trying to prepare for the season and get minutes in their legs. They're not really trying to play well, they're just making sure not to get hurt and to be ready for 33 days from now. I take absolutely nothing out of anything our top players did aside from Maxi departing six minutes in, which is concerning. Do we know the reason for that sub?

I just watched the first few minutes again, at about 2:45 Maxi takes a shot -- he appeared to tweak his left ankle or knee while doing so. It looked like his plant foot did something, maybe he didn't get a good plant or something. He appeared to have a minor limp, kept flexing it, trying to get it going again, and took a quick run before bailing out of it and getting subbed off soon thereafter.

Hard to tell if it was anything serious, but it didn't appear to be exceedingly serious. Hopefully more precautionary than anything.

Deila said in his post game that Maxi suffered a cramp and will be ready for training again on tuesday. Whether that's just making light of the situation or the truth? who knows. hopefully it is as minor as he says it is. he did not mention anything about heber and ITS... i am curious if he left them off for an injury reason, fitness reason, or some other reason. can't imagine it was because he wasn't impressed by them and didn't think they fit in with his tactics, can it?

I'm curious how he'll feel about taty and his diving. no doubt taty's work ethic will win him over though.

Just saw that interview. Good to hear. Yeah who knows about Heber and ITS. Veteran players know what they need to be ready for the season, so I'm not concerned until I have to be.

The goal with the academy kids had always been to develop cheap talent around the pitch so that you don’t need to pay Ben Sweat $200,000 a year or Eba Ofori $400,000 a year.

I think we’re just starting to see that now. Scally will cover both fullback positions this year. Sands is a mainstay. Haak will battle for deep minutes in a congested schedule with Torres. Gray will probably not see the pitch.

I will assume that this approach won’t changs with Claudio gone.

most of those youngsters aren't signed and wouldn't be available for depth. i wouldn't mind signing de rosario and jasson for added depth. especially if we are making a run in CCL and USOC and keeping up performances in MLS.
That's what I'm saying...

Think we'll see anything different in our ability to execute on this approach with Claudio gone tho?

I think with what Jasson showed he’s going to draw looks from clubs. With him being an academy player is there anything keeping another club from coming in and signing him?

Yes, we have his MLS rights. Outside of MLS, there are no restrictions (though I'm not sure of his passports or ability to play in Europe).

I don't think so. Look at Scally. He got an X 7 figure transfer fee just playing Academy and YNT ball without a minute of MLS experience. I think the possibility of transfer fee revenue is a bigger goal of the Academy than producing a 17th man on the NYCFC roster. (That doesn't sound right -- I think they are maximizing the chance of transfer fees by developing players the right soccer way in the right soccer system. That philosophy can go hand-in-hand with the promise of transfer and sell-on fees).

DeRo transferred into NYCFC Academy from Toronto because of the opportunities to shine and advance his career -- we may see more talent coming to NYC to be in our Academy because its a top program and there are real opportunities to go from Academy to pro.
