If I’m Mr. Sands, I’m on the phone with James’ agent asking him to look for a move to Germany or Holland this summer
Basing this on what?
FWIW, he spoke highly of Sands and discussed lining up both in his preferred 4-2-3-1 as well as 5-4-1, and I think said that he liked how Sands fit in the latter formation. I mentioned earlier in this thread that one of the psychologically bruising defeats for fans that soured them on Deila was when they got thrashed by Legia Warsaw in European play. It sounds like he may have taken some lessons about counterattacking teams & defensive weaknesses from that

5-4-1 sounds to me also like 3-4-3

ManhattanValley gave a good summary, but I'll add an additional tdbit from speaking to Brad Sims.

I have a more sympathetic view of what happened with the playoff game at CitiField after hearing the constraints they were under and the short amount of time they had to get it together. They've definitely heard complaints about various aspects of the experience, and plan to give not only more lead time to know what seats we are given and the opportunity to swap/adjust before the first game we'll play there in April, but also to allow time to make changes based on experience before the next game we play.

I also got to listen in on an expanded discussion on tactics between Deila and Christopher Jee Christopher Jee, perhaps he'll share more.
Put up a pretty self-indulgent and longwinded thread here. I dunno. It felt like a good chat. If you're a weirdo like me and see everything through the lens of soccer then maybe you'll get some value out of it too:

I wouldn't describe it that way. I found it really informative. Your questions were on point, grounded in specific NYCFC observations and soccer abroad, and I thought Deila was gracious with his time but also stayed longer to chat with you than most others because he enjoyed it. Looking forward to hearing your perspective in the stands from time to time this season

You’d be cheating with that, unless you’re playing last man back.

5-4-1
say we have
heber
mitri-maxi-parks-shradi
LW-sands-chanot-callens-tinnerholm

You push up the two midfielders to get 5-2-3:
mitri-heber-shradi
maxi-parks
LW-sands-chanot-callens-tinnerholm

and then that LW and tinnerholm can freely go from the defense to the midfield, meaning it's more like a 3-4-3.

Haha made literally the same point to him myself. He said he'd like to. He says he's transparent by nature and the policy comes from CFG but he agrees with it. He's tried to share more in the past and gotten stung for it. But is looking to improve transparency fans in general where possible. He said they wouldn't do so if it gave them a competitive disadvantage, and this included talking about players.

That last part is very fair -- would never ask for transparency that hurts the team on the field, that's silly. But listen, he can give all the lip service he wants. Actions speak louder than words. At some point we need to see progress. This appears to have been a nice start. Let's see how they act over the rest of the season.

What if they told you that what hurts the club is entirely up to them? It’s a blanket excuse. Don’t fall for the banana in the tailpipe.

You had a formation that had pulled the goalie.

Word. He conceded that in year 1 he focused on internal changes to his detriment. I'm encouraged by the internal change. Sounds like 20-25% increase in staff. I like it when people admit mistakes.

Good to hear about 3 or 5 in the back.
Felt like a concession tbh
I didn't hear it that way, but it might be me reading into the conversation things that weren't actually said (i.e. digging around about what went wrong at Celtic). I kind of interpreted it the same way that Vieira insisted on dogmatism as you might call it Chris but eventually came to make adjustments. I would imagine that as is true with any coaching change, no one's place is a guarantee if they don't work for it, but possible that we might see Ring and Sands instead of Sands at CB.
