It's been speculated about during the off-season as well, so I'm wondering if there are legit legs to this or just speculation picking back up. The trade would make a ton of sense.

EDIT: I found some tweets about both players missing from their team's 18 this weekend, and the trade window ends tonight. If, and big if, there's anything going on here, could be a delayed announcement.

It's all a chess game by the FO. Find value for positions that are lacking rather than stockpiling superfluous parts in congested areas. Keeping TMac past this window would be committing a massive dereliction of duty by David Lee & Co. as TMac has no place or defined role on the roster.

If he goes to SKC, it'll be interesting to see how they fit him in since they also play a faster game rather a slow methodical one.

We can always send out. We can always add a guy who is out of contract. We have to be within a transfer period to trade within MLS or to add a guy from outside the league who is in contract to another team.

I don't think that is true. You can only register a player during a transfer window, right? Think about it - Pirlo and Frank couldn't come right in after their respective seasons were over, and they weren't under any other deals.

ETA: Did some actual research. I think it backs up my understanding.

Teams can announce incoming transfers and tradesoutside of the transfer windows whenever the paperwork is official, but a player cannot officially be put on a club's roster until his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) is transferred, which must happen within one of the two transfer windows. Although players cannot participate in an official MLS game until their ITC is transferred, they are able to participate in preseason. During the MLS season, intra-league trades involving players can only happen within the windows.

The first window of the season will shut on May 8, at which point teams will no longer be able to sign players under contract in another country or make MLS trades involving players until the secondary transfer window opens on July 10. That secondary "summer" transfer window closes on Aug. 9.

While they aren’t able to make trades involving players or sign players under contract in a foreign league, MLS clubs can sign free agents from anywhere in the world at any point until the MLS roster freeze deadline on Sept. 15.

• Primary Transfer Window: Feb. 14-May 8
• Secondary Transfer Window: July 10-Aug. 9
• Roster Freeze Date: Sept. 15

Right. But signing the player and registering them is not the same. It just doesn't make sense to work the way this article suggests.
