If CFG were smart, they would put Mess at New York City and not Manchester City. He provides no additional value to Man City. They're still going to be top 2 in the Premier League and be in the top 8 of the Champions League with or without him. Put him at New York City? Bigger name recognition for the club, season ticket holder sign ups, massive TV ratings, all leading up to a stadium opening.

I think they would like to be top 1 in the Premier League, haha. But I selfishly would like to see him go to MC if only to hold out faint hope that he comes here in a few years... 36 yr old Messi would still be a top player in MLS I'm sure

he wants to win champions league. coming to MLS would be admitting his career was over. and he's definitely not ready to do that. plus, he'd go back to argentina to his boyhood club before he came to MLS, I think.

Right, because signing him means they can "put" him wherever they want to. The player is not at the stage of his career where he's likely to want to go to MLS. He's still a star in Europe. Maybe he signs for City, spends three years, then comes here. But he's not coming here right now.

MC still lags far behind in general commercial appeal worldwide compared to other big euro clubs. This is the kind of signing that can help them breakthrough to a certain degree. Very few players in each generation have that universal appeal.

Realistically though, there are only a handful of clubs he would/could go.

1. Juventus
2. PSG
3. Man City
4. Real Madrid (won't happen)
5. Bayern

I can't see him going to Juventus unless Ronaldo leaves. Though as teammates they would be pretty cool

True galaxy brain stuff here, I doff my cap. Personally I think we'll be edged out by Yokohama.

I'm highly skeptical of this. At a minimum, imagine an opposition team deciding whether they have to focus on defending Messi, Kevin de Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling or Sergio Agüero when City recovers the ball.

Adding Messi, City would immediately have TWO ultra-elite ball-progressing and shot-creating midfielders, and it may matter less that their hole at CDM doesn't get filled because of this. Pep can relax into full "we'll just outscore you" mode, and maybe Messi will tell him not to mess around too much tactically in the CL knockout rounds.

It'll be so embarrassing when they arrive and we still don't have a stadium and/or have made a permanent groundshare deal with RBNJ. Our club name will be NYC Wanderers by 2023.

could Messi be used as an incentive to speed up stadium timelines? We all know that he’s not coming to play at YS.
