RUMOR: Messi/Pep to MCFC and NYCFC

Thought that report might have some legitimacy coming from the BBC, but it turns out they're just reporting a rumour from the Daily Record.

:tearsofjoy: as you were...

Messi staying at Barca one more year. Idiots. They have no money and will let Messi leave on a free next year.

My thinking is Messi actually does want to go to City and only City. However with the contract they’d be offering him they simply can’t afford to pay anything and a back room deal was made to have Messi spend one more year at Barca and then walk away on a free. Him staying there for one more year will likely make them as much money as selling him would this year seeing as how City can’t pay much at all.

If Messi goes go to Man City next season, I hope it's just 2 years there then 2 years at NYCFC.

Lionel Messi is still the best player on the planet. Even if he has a steep aging curve, he would probably still be a monster in MLS in 5 years if he has the desire.

messi has a winner's mentality and wants to win. but he's lost his take over the game mentality. you can see it at barca even.. when the players around him didn't perform, he just kinda gave up. he also doesn't press or defend like he used to either.

Honestly I think it's more likely that both Barça and La Liga said "if you try to leave we will sue you, and the club you go to, and you'll both tarnish your legacy and also probably lose in court", and Messi saw they were right.

Is that because of his dissatisfaction with the team, or is it something else? We probably won't know until after 2020-2021.

i still feel like he had a case with the clause but of course im not him so he didnt want it to go to the courts..and seeing he technically can make a deal with man city ( or anyone) in January. it may not have made sense to have the legal battle go for few months.

and i dont think his legacy would of been tarnished if he forced his way out thru the courts....bartomeou is still hated. only half of argentina dislikes messi.

Back for 2021! He'd be 36 or 37 before coming to NYCFC (2 or 3 years at Man City)

Hopefully it will be to open the new stadium. I can't see Messi shuffling from Yankee Stadium to CitiField to Red Bull Arena to [insert college venue or venue in Connecticut here] being a thing.

do we really want messi at 36/37? i feel like he's going to be pirlo-like at that age. he already barely plays defense at barca. in a few more years and in MLS at the end of his career.. he's definitely not going to want to be involved in a press.

Can we open a stadium by summer 2023 or summer 2024?

While I can't see Messi shuffling from stadium to stadium. Yankee Stadium would be able to sell 20-25K more seats than a soccer specific stadium. That's say an extra $1M in gate revenue a game.

I wouldn't mind, but Messi may and that could guarantee that he takes the option, and then pulls an additional Lampard. Maybe that gets us to a stadium opening.
