Salt Lake - Postmatch

This was one more game (following Lewis skinning him in COL) that confirms for all of Ibeagha's usefulness as a quality backup, it's likely only as a CB in a back 4 with a RB tucked close and not as an outside CB in a back 3 with the RWB bombing forward which leave Ibeagha patrolling a large swath of real estate on the outside in addition to attackers cutting inside. he doesn't have the speed or positional fortitude to defend the space and often gets turned around reacting rather than being proactive.

I don't get this. Maxi got a knock in the game before the ASG and had to leave that game. This gave Maxi and NYC a perfect opening for him not to play in the ASG, especially because they announced even before the ASG that he would not play in the RSL game. So if he bowed out of the game the 1 game enforced DNP would not have mattered. They could have (A) not sent him to Orlando, or (B) sent him with instructions not to participate if he really wanted to go and just be part of the festivities. There is no way the league or anyone could have or would have forced him to play.

But instead we chose to send him, and leave the decision up to the MLS physio people, Orlando's coach, and Maxi, and then complain about it afterwards in a pathetic passive-aggressive whine after-the-fact. Now this statement makes it sound like he's iffy for Houston. We should have just insisted he not play and take the RSL game off and move on from there.

Another self-inflicted screw-up by NYCFC people in charge.

If Maxi misses the Houston and/or Atlanta games due to “rest/injury” then whoever from NYCFC made the decision for Maxi to play in the ASG should be fired. It was an easy out: he came out of the game before the ASG with an injury, call him injured, rest him up for a week and a half (and take his mandatory one game suspension against RSL that he wasn’t even going to play in anyway).

When all of us on the forum can make a better decision than the NYCFC staff...come on. And it sounds like he is missing future games from Dome’s reaction.

Also, who in MLS forced him to play? Sure, Maxi wanted to go and have the experience -- he can have the experience without playing. Why didn't anyone at the event keep him off the field? Completely incompetent from like 18 different people.

I think the sub of Ibeagha for Sweat once he was injured really stymied us this match. We've been successful with lineups that allow for tinkering to unlock opposition and/or slow them down and change formation fluidly. We may start in a 3-5-2, but with one change in position go to a 4-3-3 with ease (or vice versa). I think Parks should've been the sub to give us more in midfield as well as have someone who can distribute well enough on the field. No one is going to replace Maxi, no one. But also sitting Parks, our next best distributor, really showed. Ofori can pass well, and did play well, but he doesn't bring anything in terms of splitting the lines. Rest Maxi for this game and start Parks. Then rest Parks on Thursday and start Maxi. Then both can go against Atlanta on Sunday. Each would have a rest game, and we aren't missing a distributor in midfield.

Back to the sub, Ibeagha forced us to continue with 5 ATB for the rest of the match. Maybe my hope/belief that Sands can play in a 2 CB formation were wrong and Dome doesn't have faith that he can do it? Should've brought Parks on, drop Mata back, and go to a 4-3-3 to combat the midfield overload they had against us. Ring and Ofori were overloaded trying to cover an additional midfielder or two.

I hope Miller gets a go vs. Houston to see if he's actually a good backup or not.

Maybe Maxi wanted to play and get the recognition he deserved - plus getting to play and hang out with the other stars of the league is pretty nice too
I think there is a good chance that is true, but if that is the case Dome should keep quiet and not blame MLS for letting him play.
